I know this subject has been covered before but there's something that bothers me about all these construction loans in Mexico. It seems to me that the purpose of loans is to allow entrepeneurs to start or expand or increase a business, in other words, increase income & this increased income will pay for the loan. I can't see where this is the case with construction loans unless you charge a fee for people to use the bathroom or you rent out the house once it has a roof.
An entrepreneur in Azerbaijan needs a loan for her bathroom to be well equipped. And it is for renting it out: http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=18711. This loan fits in the narrow scope for Kiva.

There are two women named Tovtina, both running the same toy store in Zaporozhye, Ukraine.

Nataliya Tovtina's loan for $1,200 was disbursed Aug. 22nd.

Now a young girl named Tatyana Tovtina just got $1,200 for the same toystore:  look at the photos!!

No mention in either listing that they were affiliated with each other, in fact it makes them each sound as if they are independents, but the photos make it clear.  This bothers me a lot (since I'm a lender on the first one, especially).

Diane,

You are right that these are the same stall.

I bet the two are mother and daughter.  The first says that the borrower has a son (in prison) and a divorced daughter.   The second says that she is divorced, so that adds up.  The mother's loan says she has two stalls, so maybe they work both together.

There was a loan before where the husband and wife both took money out for the business.  That was ok with Kiva, but it would be nice if at least the second one mention it!  Maybe at the time of the first loan they didn't know about needing the second.  Or maybe the first loan was a general boost to the busines and the second is for Christmas.

Yes, the MFI should just tell us about it and let us make up our minds.

I'd go for the "two stalls" possibility, except the photos are in the same stall.  And I'd go for the "came back later" possibility, except the photos were taken on the same day (July 31).  Anyway, it's not a really big deal unless the pair is trying to pull some wool over someone's eyes.  I am assuming it's for a legit purpose, but I wish they'd been open about it.

Diane,

I hear you about full disclosure.

If I were the local loan person, I would ASK them to be in the same location on the day pictures were taken.  This would keep the time down and keep costs down.  Hopefully, it was just an oversight or a translation error (although the English is really good).  It is a 4 star organization, and that says something.  I want to be optimistic about humans' goodness and integrity...

I wonder if Kiva has guidelines about mentioning the one business, two borrower issue.  If Kiva doesn't, the partner may not feel it is particularly relevant as long as each has the income to make the payments.

I sent a pointer to this discussion to Kiva staff today.  They are sending it to their contacts at the MFI and asking them to take a look and explain.  Perhaps our concern will be heard, and future such listings will be better connected.

There are two Tajikistan loans with the same name and the same description but different photos.  This is the first one http://kiva.s3.amazonaws.com/img/w80h80/69383.jpg   The other is below it with a different loan in between.
