Ulli and I will start a joint venture. She orders an additional 10 for me and then will send those she wants to be mailed out in Germany along with mine over the pond. I will spread her German calendars through our postal system.

I plan an even split: 5 for friends in the U.S. and 5 for Germany:  one for me, one for my parents, and three for close friends. Already looking forward to them!

I'm going to send out a bunch at the University where I work.  Most of them will go to Teacher Education faculty, students and staff across a few campuses.  Others will go to folks involved with centers and programs related to Study Abroad and Diversity initiatives.

I'll add a note suggesting they consider forming lender groups, developing lessons, and various other spreading-the-word activities.

If only one in ten calendars gets a new loan made, then it's basically break-even for my Kiva bucks budget.  Anything more than that is leverage!

Guys we already sold most likely at least 10% of these, 8% just between the 4 voters alone....thats awesome!!!  Great poll Richard.  I have 20, but I may get another 10 later on.  I didnt want to get too many right off the bat in case this turns out well.  (Nothing wrong with getting 40 though to whomever).  I plan on giving them for Christmas gifts to about 7-8 family members, maybe 1/2 of those with GCs, give out another 6-7 to friends or acquaintances, one for myself of course!!!  and the rest to a few people in the spotlight who are considered philanthropists of sorts...Im sending one to President Clinton for sure.  That would be awesome if he used it.  Hes so passionate about Kiva, just like us.  The very affordable price allows us to take a chance on that with people I think.  If they were $10 each Id be a little more careful about who I gave them out to.  And if you think about it, I bet most of these calendars will be purchased by people who want to spread the message about Kiva.  Which is funny, because its like we are making this calendar for ourselves and to serve our own well-intentioned agenda.

I was frankly a little confused when I went to order calendars.  Do you have to join PayPal to buy the calendars?  So far while loaning, we have refrained from signing up with PayPal. The check-out was a bit confusing on that score.

Also, surely someone could set up a sticky thread with a summary of the details for the calendar as they emerge.  Over 36 pages in one thread plus the polls is a very time consuming exercise for this Kiva Friend.  I think we will be ordering about 40-50 when the time comes.

John,

Out of curiosity, how many calendars need to be ordered to have this project get printed?  What is the date that this will be decided?

Dan,
Whenever you use PayPal, you can use a credit card.  That method works for the calendars too.  Smiley

Colette, I think were going forward with this no matter what.  I think Chris would be happy to see the pre-orders from less than a day of 130 calendars from just 6 people...thats awesome, and so many have not even answered this poll question yet that I know themselves are buying 10,20 if not more.  So I think we are in a good position to go forward.  Of course thats not my say, just my hope.  Maybe Chris is looking for half sold through pre-orders, but I dont know if he has a magic number in mind that we we have to reach.  Perhaps he'll let us know.

And Dan, what did you need to know???  If you have any specific questions you can ask any one of us posting there and wed be glad to help.  For reference, John Rigdon, Chris, and Christopher are the three guys I believe with the most know how and the most hands on work at this point, in case you have any specific questions about costs, production, or distribution that any of us cant adequately answer for you.

Okay, Questions --

1. Will it have a way to hang it without puncturing the pictures?
2. Will the pictures have anything more than the names and locations? (A web address to their loan page, any of the particulars on the loan, business activity, etc)
3. Will the pictures be glossy or mat finish?
4. Will Kiva or at least the Kiva logo be on each page?
5. Will the calendar area have small previous and next month calendars on it?

And so forth.  Some of this may have been answered in the lengthy discussion, but a summary would be nice.  Not all of the friends visiting here are going to wade through a lengthy discussion for the answers.

Hey Dan.  Some of these questions Chris can answer better than anyone since hes the one putting in the order and having these printed upon completion.  In case he doesnt get back to you I can answer some of these questions for you.

1. I do remember someone stating it will have a hole to hang from, and based on the layout of the calendar the hole most likely wont be interfering with the actually picture at all.  Here is a link to page 18 of the discussion thread, half way back, about a week ago.  Its our latest design of the interior of the calendar that Christopher (not to be confused with Chris), primarily came up with.

http://www.kivafriends.org/index.php/topic,988.170.html

For the most part it will look something like this.  We have small details to work out such as rounded edges vs straight, whether to include country flag or not, very minor things like that.  As you probably know we are in the process of narrowing down the final 12 pictures to correspond with the 12 months.  Then we will plan on doing the brief write ups which wont take long.  After that Im guessing we will address the bottom half of each page of the calendar and some of the things you brought up such as next months calendar on each month, to place the moon data inside as most calendars do...right now we are debating on holidays...and for some reason its a very touchy issue...some want to include only world or UN holidays, but some have great points that lots of these days can be construed as being political or divisive, even though they all relate to peace and eradicating poverty and war, etc.....

To answer some of your other questions...as you can tell by the draft I included, kivas logo will be on every page in a very subtle and not overly stated fashion, and the web addresses, because they are so long and awful looking, will most likely be placed on the back next to a miniature picture of each entrepreneur represented within the calendar.  We have accomplished so much in only 11 days after starting from scratch and Jill bringing this idea to light once again.  We still have about two- maybe three weeks to get it together in order to have them ready by mid to late October.  Our most time consuming tasks remaining to complete are the cover and the back.  There will also be an extra page (two actually- the backside of the front cover and the page on the back of the January picture), which will include any variety of information such as an intro to Kiva, how to use it, testimonials, and pertinent info...There will be lots of ideas here, but once it gets decided, writing it up will be no problem.  We will also include mentions from Oprah and President Clinton as well along with some current Kiva stats.  We may pull info and introductions straight from kiva.org with their permission...since they have given us permission for everything else, including logos, pictures, etc...

As far as glossy or mat, Chris would have to answer that one, but an excellent question...one of the few that has not yet been asked about the calendar.  Hope this answers some of your questions.  If you have others feel free to post and I or anyone else would be happy to answer them to the best of our ability.  I know it would be such a burden to read the calendar thread through from page 1, especially since much of it pertains to sifting through and debating ideas about what to include or exclude and how to go about the whole process.
