I was just now indulging in one of my favorite sports, that is, clicking on the pics of co-lenders to see who had had the good sense to jump on one of my loans ( smile), and I happened upon this pic in one of my co-lenders' portfolios. I just thought it was a neat pic. http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=31600 Akou Goka – Food Production/Baker – Togo

I tend to like those who seem almost to busy with their work to bother a picture being taken.

Bread is such a staple in all of our lives and I have loved the photos in this thread... I was very interested in reading the latest Fellows' blog from Ghana... http://fellowsblog.kiva.org/2008/07/25/the-expectation-of-innovation/ where she talked about... "Take the sale of bread, for instance. Generally speaking, there are 4 types of bread in Ghana: sugar bread, tea bread, butter bread, and brown bread (all of which are delicious). And on any given commercial street in Cape Coast, you’ll likely find one or two bread stands, two or three breakfast stands, and seven or more general stores, all selling some combination of these four breads. Why, I’ve wondered, if bread is so popular, does no one experiment with other types of bread?" and then went on to tallk about how difficult that might be. jan

YUMMY! And also a story of perseverance. Madeleine Madeleine is 40 years old and was separated from the father of her children. However, six years ago, they decided to try living together again. They have five children, three of whom still live with her. When she was a young girl she observed that her mother made cakes and sold them. But, at the age of ten, her mother passed away and her father wasn’t as responsible with the children. At that point, she decided to put into practice what her mother did and little by little she perfected the art of baking. She now lives off this trade, making large decorations for parties and events of great significance. She also continues to offer small cakes on the streets, which is how she started her business. She gets great enjoyment from these activities and, especially now that she has taken some baking classes, she has attracted a good customer base and proceeds without any difficulty. This is her fifth loan with Microfinanzas Prisma. The funds she is requesting will be used to buy decorations and finishing touches in the city of Lima, because in her area there are no items of this type.

Khijran JafarovaKhijran Jafarova is a 46-year-old woman whose main source of income is bread making. Khijran is married with five children. Khijran's mother taught her how to make bread, and she chose it for the main business in her life of housewife. Early in the morning Khijran wakes up to make pastry and at 9 a.m. she starts to make bread in the big oven that she has in her own yard. She sells bread to the local people and to the restaurants. This is a very profitable business, but to make this business more successful, Khijran needs to build a better oven to speed up the whole process of bread making. For this purpose she applied for $1200. Let’s do our best to help this hard-working woman.

I was pleased to catch that one above ... love those pictures of stone ovens. Here's an earlier loan I made to someone in Tajikistan. I really like the look of their round breads that show up in so many of the photos. Mahmud Gafurov

Baking bread like that takes a lot of time but a fresh bread tastes better then a cake. I love a warm bread just from the oven or the stone.
