This is the introduced journalist John. Occam is just my Kiva-handle. Any questions about dealing with editors just ask ;-)
So, John, might editors print letters of this type? I would think most would not - there are so many charities out there, they would be inundated! Unless, of course, the writer could relate it to a recent news or feature article. Dottie B

I've sent a similar letter to the Economist a while ago, they haven't written about it yet. Figured it'd at least make it on their economics blog, but no dice either.

It depends on the newspaper and the amount of space they have available. Local, community newspapers would be more apt to print a press release or guest column than a larger metro newspaper.
The best way to catch an editor's eye is uniqueness. Do not promote Kiva as a regular non-profit agency looking for a handout. Those will be ignored and trashed quickly. Try to hit on the organization's objective and how it works differently by recycling funds lent to entrepreneurs.

I sent a letter to the Buffalo news a few months back but I figured a story, article, or opinion piece was not done since they verify your letter and info with a phone call, which wasnt made to me. I made it quite personal, emphasized all the compelling unique aspects of kiva that differentiate it from other organizations, and even fit the length down to their required maximum number of words--it was submitted to the whats going on in the community portion of the paper....it would be hard to place it in the opinion section open to the public because it doesnt really relate to being an opinion...but it seems even more difficult to provide the news info and hope they write up their own article from scratch...but Ill try again soon...we have some small local papers called the Metro and Tribune which reach a very large area and are very popular for only being about 15 pages and half the measurements of a normal newspaper...they may have less news stories to sift through and publish from the community than the other mainstream papers, so maybe there would be a little more success writing in to them, as previously suggested...Ill post follow up...

I find not direction in the readings of those with whom my eccentricities are similar, but rather validation.
My only solace is that I find a peaceful place where I might be resigned to my depriving loneliness.

I sent a letter to the editor on 10/23/07, but have not had any response from the editor nor has the letter appeared in the newspaper. Will keep you advised.

I have been thinking lately that you could submit a letter to columnists too and or business editors. Most of the focus on Kiva has been from a business angle because lenders are investing in entrepreneurs.
Just a suggestion.

Any Wisconsin lenders here? - not in Madison but some other town/city? Hi, everyone. Maggie ( maggie@maggieschutz.com) is interviewing Wisconsin Kiva lenders for an article in Wisconsin Trails. She needs folks who do not live in Madison. If this is you please contact her.(I've posted this before in Anything Goes but it soon got lost).

Fiona: Great idea! I will adapt this as a language arts activity for the Kiva curriculum I'm working on. I definitely think it might play better if it is localized/profiles the connections between local lending groups(such as schools) and entrepreneurs.
Let me know if you have other ideas in a similar vein!
