I spent this afternoon with my granddaughter making holiday cookies.  My daughter, who is expecting in about two weeks, and her husband were busy starting to prepare for Thanksgiving at their house on Thursday.  My job was to keep Samantha busy and out from under their feet.  So we pulled up a chair to the kitchen counter, got on our aprons, and started making cookes.  Even at 3 1/2 she loves to get her little hands into the cookie dough and then watching them cook through the oven door.  What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

And this experience made me think of all that I am thankful for this holiday season.  Family and friends, a new baby coming into our family, a new son-in-law too sometime next year, friends who I can call upon for an ear or a shoulder when needed or share in the laughter and joy of living.

We are thankful for so much in our lives and as Kivans we share what we have so that other members of our world community can be more thankful in their daily lives.

How exciting for you that you are making cookies and preparing for a new baby in the family.  It adds one more thing in which to be thankful.  Not just that we have a roof over our head, food on our table, that we were born in a prosperous country, but that we have the time to make cookies with our grandchildren and not exhausted from working 16 hour days just trying to make ends meet to provide for our extended family.

I think of my Kiva loan recipients every time I take a shower.  What a luxury just to have running water, let alone hot running water, and wonder what their practice is for something as simple (to us) as bathing.  Too many times in my life I've taken that for granted.  With Kiva in my life, I doubt I'll do that anymore.  So I'm doubly grateful to have found Kiva and be given a renewed appreciation, not to mention finding Kivafriends and being able to discuss my renewed appreciation freely.

One of the things I always do is to go to the 'Fast Country Facts' at the bottom of the Field Partner page for each loan.  Listed are many fascinating details that truly open my eyes with a new awareness.  If you have an income over $2,000 a year, are still alive nearing or beyond 50 years of age, and can read this posting, you have oh-so much in which to be thankful.

May we all increase our awareness to everything we truly have in life not just at Thanksgiving, but at all times of the year.  Thanksgiving just gives us permission to vocalize our thoughts without looking too crazy.

In the end, we will conserve only what we love.
We will love only what we understand.
We will understand only what we have been taught.

The pro football team had just finished their daily practice session when a large turkey came strutting onto the field. While the players gazed in amazement, the turkey walked up to the head coach and demanded a tryout. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines, the coach shouted, "You're terrific!!! Sign up for the season, and I'll see to it that you get a huge bonus." "Forget the bonus," the turkey said, "All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day?"

What key has legs and can't open doors?

Gobbler said, "Doctor, help me! I can't stop acting like a turkey!"
"I see," said the doctor. "How long have you had this problem?"
"Let me think a second. Mom laid the egg in 1954..."

I always check the quick facts, too, and particularly notice the infant mortality rate.  Which leads to what I am very thankful for: that my 3 grandchildren were born in Canada.  Each was born by Cesarean (two daughters, a different complication in each instance).  Elsewhere in the world, they and my daughters might not have survived, and the health care costs which were publically funded here might have crippled the family budget.
