Ooo, Fred beat me to it!

I also received a copy of Three Cups of Tea- generously sent to me here in Canada by Jill. What a wonderful person!

I'm nearly finished the book and at about half way I was thinking... ok what more could there be to write about here... but then you reach the point in time when the Sept 11 attacks happened. Whew! What an amazing story to hear first hand the reaction of some of the locals who literally wept for the victims in 'New York Village'. It really brought tears to my eyes. It also makes me so angry at how the media manages to portray the whole Islamic community as anti-American or that they are all extremists, which just isn't true.

Greg Mortenson's work has done more to fight terrorism than the whole ridiculous 'war on terror'. Let's see.... $12,000 schools vs. $1,000,000 bombs. Yup, the US government could have built 83 schools in the middle east for each one of those bombs it dropped on targets that it wasn't positive were Al-Qaeda bases.

*sigh*

Anyway, I find this is one of the more inspirational, and educational books I've ever read. I've learned more about that area through this book than by anything else. This should be made into a movie and released on a Sept 11th anniversary.

Thank you Jill from the bottom of my heart!

On a side note, a friend of a friend knows a soldier in the Canadian Armed Forces who is/was stationed in Afghanistan. He says he has seen the media video tape a family who's house was just mistakenly destroyed via the Canadian Forces' activities and the family is obviously upset and cursing the Canadian soldiers and the media portrays it that everyone there hates the soldiers. But he says just out of line of sight of the camera is many, many locals who are happy that the forces are there and for the protection they provide and for getting Al-Qaeda out. Sheesh. What happened to REAL journalism? And why do we sit on our couches and watch this junk? Maybe we're more to blame than the media is- for giving us what we supposedly want.  Shocked

Sherri - I agree with everything in your post.  Thumbs Up 3 Cups of Tea is a great book (I've already passed it to a family member and will continue to lend it to friends when I get it back).  I especially like your idea of making it into a movie and releasing it on a Sept 11th anniversary. Anyone know a creative movie producer?

Yes Steve the key word in my message was "LEND"...as I have not even read it yet..I am working my way through some other books that I asked for at Christmas and now my girls want to know why I am "reading so much about depressing topics like poverty"...little do they know but it is not depressing at all...but rather is shining a light onto a huge problem that we can all be a part of solving.

That's a really interesting comment, Queen.  Makes me think. Hmmm Thinking Hmmm I, too, find that learning more about this "depressing" topic really excites me.  It actually makes me happy reading about some of these things, now that I know some ways we can help.

I just checked out the Central Asia Institute site.  We were talking here in the Forum about how great it would be if 3 Cups of Tea were made into a movie. Apparently we were by no means the first to suggest this.  This is how Greg Mortensen's website has responded to the suggestion:

[Greg] says he has been approached by Hollywood for the film rights but so far isn't interested. Producers seem to have "little integrity and genuine sincerity to make a film that would strive to show that we want to promote peace, rather than fight terrorism." He says he has received death threats from mullahs and post-9/11 hate mail from Americans, and he doesn't "need Hollywood to contribute to that." Hmmm

For the impoverished, it might be depressing if there were no way out.  For me, Kiva is a way to shine light of hope on a few individuals who are willing to work their way toward a better future.  Hope is an antidote to depression!

Contrary to the topic being depressing to us readers, I think instead it instills a lot of motivation and encouragment within us the more we can grasp the solutions and involve ourselves in them.

We should send copies of this book to Oprah, and all the US Presidential Candidates with a post-it note that says: "The new strategy for the war on terror that you've been speechifying about".  Cheesy
