First time (potential) loaner here, who will probably not become an actual loaner because of problems funding Kiva with a credit card. The Kiva site provides a phone number that they say is dedicated to Kiva, but it most certainly is not; it is just a general support number. Anyway, called PayPal to see why they declined my CC, and they said it was my company (amex), not them. Called Amex and they said it was PayPal that was declining it.
I am obviously not the only one with PayPal problems. Millions of online merchants are able to accept credit cards without PayPal; I would recommend Kiva looks into other providers.

paypal does not charge fees to kiva. A regular merchant account would either need to charge you the fees, or take fees out of their operating budget, or decrese the loan to the borrower with processing fees.
Yes, paypal is not perfect, but it is free.

True, good point. The amount that fees would eat into the capital is probably much more than capital lost due to the small percentage of people that are unable to loan because of PayPal. Kiva is a great concept, hope it does well!

Figured out the problem. I was using prepaid cards, trying to deposit the full amount. However, PayPal first tries to charge $1 to see if the card is legit, and then tries the full amount. So for my $50 card, it only had a $49 balance. So from now on I will just deposit $1 less then I have, and consider the $1 a "service charge".

Great you figured it out... and won't the $1 be refunded to your card or (in case you have one) credited to your Paypal account?
Welcome and happy lending @ Kiva, best wishes, Wolfgang.

It'll eventually be refunded to the card, but it ain't worth waiting for. It is a good thing I am allowed to deposit less than $25 at a time though, because these cards usually come in $25 increments!

The last couple of times I've used paypal all of my options are greyed out except for Echeck. Instant bank transfer and credit card options are not availible. Then there's a cryptic remark about higher risk transactions will only allow for certain methods? I E-mailed paypal and their response basically said click the more funding options. It didn't compute with them I had anything was made unavailible to me beyond Echeck.
Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Silly me to post before retesting the problem again.... the problem seems to have resolved itself. I wonder if contacting them did trigger something to fix the problem but why they'd give me a non-response is beyond me!

I have a similar problem. I fill in all the details you have to provide to make a credit card donation; and then it just states that I should use another credit card or create a paypal account. No way I'm doing that last thing! And they don't give me any clue as to WHAT the *** problem is... I've checked ten times and all the information I fill in, is correct.
I phoned Paypal (yes, internationally...) and a very nice lady said there should not be a problem; I should ask my credit card company.
I phoned my credit card company and they said there should not be a problem: I have enough room for the money I want to donate to kiva, my card is not blocked... He said that paypal has taken two times 75 dollarcents from my account; perhaps to check whether the card's valid. But I have used this card before, to increase my Kiva credit (actually: up to March 26) and it all worked before...
It's very very frustrating! All these loans are expiring and I cannot lend a hand because I just cannot add credit!!

Are we having Paypal problems again? I added Kiva credit about two hours ago and it has not yet shown up in my Kiva account.
