Paypal has awful currency exchange rates - I imagine this is where they make much of their profit. Luckily there's a way to avoid it.
In your paypal account you can choose to open a second account in another currency. You can do this under "my account" - "profile" - "currency balances" Now just deposit the money to that account with your credit card or through your bank and let them do the converting.
As I only deposit money to paypal for Kiva loans, I've set the USD account to be my primary. I'm not sure if you get to specify which account it should charge when you fund a Kiva loan, so if you only use it for Kiva you may wish to do so as well.

Hi Soriak, thanks for your clarification. I was not aware of this. I've given a look at website. It seems a good way. Unfortunately i'm using it for other payents too, and i should define my main account everytime... at least there is a way to avoid it, if desired.

Thanks for the great tip! I wish I had new that before. I don't think I will able to make many more loans soon, because I spent already a bit more on Kiva than financially wise...
But is is a very good tip anyway!

I think it may automatically use the account with the matching currency - should be easy to test at least

you're right, that's hwo it should work rationally. But it's not unfortunately. Already tested... anyway, if Visa has to change currency, i guess it will not be much cheaper... maybe i should activate another account. cheers

I have found that it always works out better for me to let my Visa do the currency conversion for me rather than other payment gateways like Paypal or 2Checkout etc. So I just pay as US funds then my Visa converts it to Canadian for me.

I do not have my paypal account tied to my bank account at all. When I make a payment I pay in the currency of the seller. when I pay Kiva, I don't even log into paypal I just make a direct CC payment.
I refuse to give paypal my bank account info.

sorry i guess there is some kind of misunderstanding here... i meant : my paypal account has EUR as primary currency and USD enabled Paypal is payed by Visa. Visa is payed by an EUR bank account. At this moment, paypal is charging me EUR and not USD. When I make a payment I pay in the currency of the seller. do you mean that paypal let you choose currency? if so i'm terribly dummy, as i missed this... cheers

How do you pay Kiva without logging into Paypal? Kiva automatically takes me to Paypal. Dottie B

I think we technically do log in to PayPal, but choose the "pay with credit card" option instead of opening a PayPal account. We too are cautious about linking PayPal to our bank account.

That's what I do, too. Can't see a reason to link to my bank account, as I don't use it for great sums. Dottie B

Dottie, When I arrive on the Paypal screen there is the box to log in... alternatively there's an option to pay with a credit card without logging in.... I use that option. Down side is you have to fill in your address and other info from scratch.

I think I have USD set to my default in Paypal, even though I'm Canadian. I prefer to take the currency of the seller and have Visa convert it- I get a better rate.

Yes, you can use multiple currencies.
A few days ago I made 2 loans on the same day.
The first loan I did the normal way from my creditcard with the paypal exchangerate. $25 was €17,37.
For the second loan I charged $25 from my creditcard, and let mastercard convert it, that tuned out to be €17, 30
So it does make a difference, it might not be huge but is worth knowing.
