(If I'm right, this post should appear, with the link, on a new thread page.)

I was a serious fan of "Six Feet Under" on television (as in, a never-missed-an-episode schedule-activities-around-air-time kind of fan, unusual for me with television shows), and was listening to the 2nd soundtrack album from the show, "Everything Ends", in the car today.  Almost everything in this set is excellent, but I wanted to especially highlight the late Nina Simone's rendition of "Feeling Good", which opens the collection.  This video is a tribute to her career, but the sound is all Nina in all her depth and wonderfulness.

And another from the same soundtrack:  "Amazing Life" by JEM  (with another uninteresting video).

(And another inspiring offering from JEM:  "It's Amazing".  (Anyone else see a trend in her song titles?  Wink )

This album has absolutely bowled me over lately.  Okay, okay, I'm almost 50 years too late, but WOW.  It's amazing.  It was my son who introduced me to Bob Dylan, by playing

I love this quote from Dylan's wikipedia article:  "When the young Bobby Womack told Sam Cooke he didn’t understand Dylan’s vocal style, Cooke explained that: “from now on, it's not going to be about how pretty the voice is. It's going to be about believing that the voice is telling the truth.”

This whole album is fantastic.  I'm so blown away by it.  Does anyone else know it?

Thanks, Tatiana,

I love this video - with Pete Seeger, a huge Dylan supporter and patron at that time, in the background. And your post made me "complete" my Dylan collection a little and order some (more) of his CDs (among them "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan"). Though I am still not always quite sure about the voice*... Wink

(* Listen to Pete Seeger's renditions of "Who Killed Davey Moore?", "Fare Thee Well" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" at his brilliant Carnegie Hall concert June 1963 - published as "We Shall Overcome" [2 CDs] - in comparison, and you will probably know what I mean... )

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

PS: Couldn't forego the opportunity to post a video here myself:

wolfgang, that was great!  I'll have to check out Pete Seeger now too.  I've been thinking about seeing if there are any folk music groups around here and maybe taking my son and seeing if he'll play.  Probably I need to do my homework first and learn more about people like Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie, etc.  Thanks for the vid.

Tatiana, you are very welcome... you will have a lot to do Wink - but it will be a great experience.

To learn more about Pete Seeger, I can recommend the movie "The Power of Song" (Jill had posted about it here, some months ago), to learn more about (the folk singer) Dylan, the movie "No Direction Home" is a good starting point, I guess. For Woody Guthrie, the movie "This Land is My Land" is worth watching.

You really shouldn't neglect the contemporary folk singers, though. Some come to my mind right away:

Peter Mayer (careful, there are two singers with this name - completely different music):

John McCutcheon:

Great Big Sea:

(and in fact, many more)

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

That Pete Mayer was great!  I've never heard anyone play guitar by beating on it before.  =)  Now I'm going to listen to the other two you linked.

I heard a snippet of music on a college radio station while driving home from work tonight and it set off the "I know that tune!" neurons, and sure enough, my first guess was correct (or else my memory is holding steady even as I age!).  It's by Dave Grusin, the themesong from an early-mid-'80s TV show which I never missed, "St Elsewhere".  I can't find a good youtube video of it to post, so I'll just attach the .mp3 to this post.  It's brought me a constant smile for the last half-hour or so, I hope it brings one to you as well.

Dylan? Did somebody say Dylan?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Like a Rolling Stone" is a song by American songwriter Bob Dylan. One of his best-known and most influential works, the song had its origin as a short story Dylan had written before developing it as a song and recording it in 1965.

There is a live version from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival but I think this studio version is far superior. It is available on YouTube.

Thanks, Diane, it did - I had never heard of the TV show St. Elsewhere, only of the Gnarls Barkley album with that title:

As for theme tunes making one smile, this one is my favourite, I guess (composed by Ron Goodwin):

Best wishes,
