Live From Lincoln Center:  The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma

...

Education is a fundamental element in the activities of the Silk Road Project. In that regard it has established educational resources for elementary and middle school students. In 2005 a residency was set up at Harvard University (Yo-Yo Ma's alma mater) and the Rhode Island School of Design, which has brought members of the Ensemble to lead interactive projects with students and faculties of those institutions. In addition, museum residencies have brought Ensemble musicians to such esteemed locations as the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts; the Rietberg Museum in Zurich, Switzerland; the Nara National Museum in Nara, Japan; the Rubin Museum of Art in New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Here is more background on the Silk Road Project itself
http://www.silkroadproject.org/
There is more information there about the musicians and the instruments themselves, some of which I had never seen.

Here is more background and short reviews of recent concerts by the Silk Road Ensemble in New York City
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/08/arts/music/08silk.html?_r=1&src=twt&twt=nytimesarts

If you get a chance, check it out! Thumbs Up

The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma will perform today at a Late Night Prom in London - it is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 from 10.15 pm British Summer Time (webstream: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio3.shtml) and will be available as audio on demand for the following week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2009/whatson/1109.shtml#prom75

Just thought some of you might be interested...

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

Tonight I have a special treat in store:  I am attending a benefit concert in San Francisco billed as, "This Land is Your Land".  In addition to two acts, Johnny Irion, and The Waybacks, I am mostly going because of the headliner:  Pete Seeger.

Since I know Pete has many fans and admirers here at KivaFriends, I'll be taking all of you with me virtually tonight, and will sing along with you all providing harmony in my heart.

Edited to add this, from Pete's bio on the venue website:
Quote
His ceaseless passion for reaching the hearts and minds of those who will listen is summed up by the inscription on his banjo which reads "This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender." Pete Seeger's music does not force hate to surrender with muscle or intimidation, but with Seeger's simple honesty and pure-hearted clarity which has truly changed the course of history during the 60-plus years that he has been performing.

Sounds great, Diane. I know you will have a great time.
See if you can get Pete's autograph about 20 times  Smiley

For you other codgers out there, I bought a cd of the newly-remastered Beatles music (specifically Revolver) that they've been hyping lately.  It is N I C E.  If you're on the fence, go for it; they did a great job with it.  All the integrity of the original is there but the sound has been improved.  Thumbs Up

Yeah, 20 times sounds about right.   Kiss

While you are at it ask Pete what he thinks about being in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Too bad Mary didn't get the chance to see that outcome.  Time, she is a changin'.

Don't get me wrong, it's great music. It's just thinking that the music is 40 years old or more that makes me feel old. I feel like my grandparents reminiscing about Scott Joplin. (which is also great music!)

Any other rogue VAST fans out there? There seem to be annoyingly few of us

And, because it's stuck in my head, my second favorite of their songs:

Here's a clip that's pretty amazing, but when you find out that all the dancers are deaf it becomes stunning.
