I have a question for Kiva and I will also send it to contactus, but maybe they can enlighten us here as well:

For a while now I have been puzzled by the status of MFIs. Kiva is using basically four categories:

Active
Pilot
Paused
Closed

After some searching, I did find information here, under point 7. and 8.:

7. Pilot program begins

* Please plan to spend up to 4 months in the Pilot phase.
* If approved for partnership, your MFI will participate in a Pilot Program to become familiarized with the Kiva model, tools and resources.
* Your MFI will be able to fundraise via the Kiva platform, at a reduced amount.
* Kiva will provide ongoing assistance and guidance during the Pilot Program.

8. Welcome to Kiva!

* After a successful Pilot phase, your organization may begin fundraising up to your monthly limit via the Kiva platform!
* Your Kiva Partnerships Manager will provide ongoing guidance and assistance during your relationship with Kiva.

My question however remains and concerns active vs. pilot:

When and/or how does a Pilot MFI move up to active? And why is the pilot phase oftentimes much longer than the stated 4 months? One in the DRC is at 21 months, another one at 11 months, quite a number significantly above the 4 months. I am just curious: does this mean they are experiencing problems? Or is it a loss of interest thing?

Oli

The DRC one is indeed curious - it hasn't offered a loan for 18 months, and the last was repaid over a year ago. Is it really still regarded as active, with pilot status?

Here's an answer to the questions raised above.

During Pilot Status, we ask our partners to write up a manual about their Kiva process, and we perform a pilot consultation that often includes a visit to make sure things are okay and that they understand Kiva; we clear up policy questions; and we do borrower verifications to make sure they are posting correctly, etc.

Pilot generally lasts 3-6 months, but in some cases it might be more, especially if a partner is not posting very much. If a partner doesn't post enough, Kiva won't have confidence that a partner has developed a good posting process.

For the 21 monther, HOPE DRC.  They went dormant on Kiva for about 14 months after raising funds for 6 months or so. For this reason, we wanted to basically treat them as a new partner to get them back up and running.  Thus, the prolonged pilot stage.
