Naomi,

thank you so much for getting us involved and for sharing with us. It makes me proud to see that the goal was more than reached. Extend my thanks to the anonymous donor as well, please. He/she/it has made a big difference! I am so happy that we could help AN:K, one of my favourite MFIs (though I have not been able to lend to their clients personally)...

Keep us in the loop, Naomi!

Greetings from Botswana

I’ve had the good fortune and great pleasure of being able to carry on an occasional back-and-forth correspondence with the Executive Director of Action Now: Kenya, Irene Kamau, whom I’ve really grown to care about.  Following is most of a recent e-mail she sent me along with a picture of those wonderful t-shirts we’d heard about during Naomi Arron’s GiveMeaning fundraising.  They’re very cool looking.  I think so, anyway….

Hi….
…..How is everything going on out there, with the great debates of your two
presidential candidates? I love that they discuss real issues, and that there is
capacity for the citizenry to hold them accountable for their promises, unlike here
where they only give one packet of free cooking flour or sugar, make the promises,
and never keep any, and with time, it even got worse, that all they do here is
identify with their tribes and they get votes.

Anyway, for us here, work is coming up well, and we are trying to clear off loan
backlogs with our clients, and helping those in low business seasons to keep up. On
the positive, i am excited coz we got some bit of funds to conduct business training
to all our clients, so they will learn how to better manage their businesses, say by
keeping simple records, and also learn how to go about doing business registration
which is quite a huge deal here. We shall also be distributing the T-shirts for the
Better Together campaign during these trainings. So i can say here that at least God
has been gracious, that inspite the difficulties through the year, we shall get to
achieve something i have looked forward to, for a very long time.
So I would say i greatly appreciate your support and that of others …….

By the way, i have attached some photos of the T-shirts we made for all our clients.
I would appreciate greatly if you could somehow help me get them to the Kiva friends
forum, since i know many Kiva friends helped us raise the funds for the same. Just
tell them, you are working for ANK on quarter time basis, and your boss requested
you to help her, by just saying thank you very much - in swahili we say Asante Sana!
for their support. About 350 clients will get a t-shirt each, and another 30
T-shsirts will be distributed to our partners, suppliers and colleagues. I only wish
i had a way to send you (all) one.....

Take care,

Regards,

Irene K.

Thanks for posting the update from ANK, Jill! Grin It's so great to see a photo of the campaign and to hear about the goings on at ANK these days. The t-shirts look great!

I have been out of the loop for a while because I'm back in Africa, Zambia this time, working on a research project. There are so many great opportunities for microfinance here too, but the industry is still young in these parts. It's amazing how the informal economy takes over in so many developing countries...and that's the reason why microfinance can have such an impact!

Until the next one,
Naomi

Now we can all say thank you in Swahili - on the count - 1 - 2 - 3 - Asante Sana!

Asante Sana! Jill, for staying in touch with Irene and posting to us.

Asante Sana! Naomi, for popping in and letting us know where you are and what you are involved with now.  Be well in all you do.

I am just starting to worry a bit about one of my loans that has already been funded on 19 September but has not yet been disbursed: http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=65687

Have there been any problems lately for/with ANK I have missed? Hope of course not...

Hi Ramona,

I have been experiencing rather huge lags with disbursement of loans from several MFIs (also usually quick-disbursing ones) lately, probably due to the mass of newly and quickly funded loans - I don't think there is any need to worry yet.

Regarding AN:K: Of my 3 latest loans with them one has been disbursed just today (the other two are still only "raised" for over two weeks now) so I can confirm they are still around and working.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

I missed Jill's update while in Philly... Embarrassed Roll Eyes Huh? No Smiley

Very happy indeed about the picture. It's great to see the shirts and it's, as always, wonderful to hear from Irene directly... Smiley

Jill, if at all possible, could you inquire with her about Mama Mark and how she is doing? Thanks.
