Today, the Kiva Friends Stats box says the average number of loans per Kiva lender is 2.58. On the Kiva Facts & Stats page, it reports 0.15 loans/lender. I assume these reports are using the same title to mean different things. For Kiva, it's (Number of loans that have been funded through Kiva) / (Number of Kiva Lenders) = 41,616 / 280,864 = 0.15 loans/lender. Put another way, this means it takes 6 2/3 lenders to fund one average $515.98 loan (6 2/3 lenders/loan). I assume/hope the Kiva Friends number means, "the average Kiva lender has made 2.58 loans." The way Kiva Friends reports it seems more intuitive than what Kiva reports for loans/lender. Am I reading these numbers correctly? Knowing we have lots of Kiva lenders out there with more than just one or two loans, this also means we have lots of "lenders" out there with zero loans on the books. It would be interesting to see a frequency distribution on this - e.g., how many lenders with 0, 1, 2, 3, ..etc. loans. The more interesting follow-up would be to try to lean why those who signed up haven't made any loans yet. Maybe the upcoming Kiva developers page will provide an opportunity to look into some more fine tuning questions like this. |

I, too, would like to see a breakdown of Kiva Lenders by number of loans (0, 1, 2, 3, etc.), as well as by amount loaned ONCE (not including reloans) on X number of loans, with amount withdrawn after being repaid.
The statistics given (Avg. Kiva User $102 loaned/$50 repaid) don't really reveal much.

Today, I noticed Kiva and Kiva Friends now agree on this one... Average number of loans per Kiva Lender: 2.63 I also noticed the lender download has changed a bit. Now, the Business ID number has a few leading zeros, e.g., 0000000045532. That should work for a while. Is it too early to start placing bets on loan number 1,000,000,000,000?!  |

... and many, many more Kiva Friends with considerable portfolios (you all know who you are). The "event"-thread has been celebrating some (far from all) of the huge milestones as inspirations to other lenders. I don't think Kiva is about the number of loans, though, but about working together to lend entrepreneurs around the world a hand (or two) - every single loan counts for that.
I have to say that I'm quite happy that Kiva (or our stats- and computer-mastermind Ian who could probably find out) so far refrained from publishing a top 100 or something like that.

the api allows one to query things like user and number of loans. The largest number is not as interesting as the number of members with no loans, which is significant.
Average is not as interesting as median or mode. I don't know what it is currently, but this would show where the big central distribution of the users are. Since the distribution is not bell like (the number of zeros is large) - average is not really important.
Since (hopefully) the point of kiva is to lend over and over, the middle should naturally increase even if the rate of loaning per user remains the same, as old paid back loans contribute. New lenders do not have the old paid off loans to contribute to their numbers.
Since I have a feeling, a feeling deep inside (oh yeah) - that old lenders are not reloaning, getting nw lenders is important to Kiva. But I am reminded of the cell phone companies who have fantastic cut rates to steal customers from rival services, then completely abandond them with lousy service and high prices once they have them.
"Churn" rate is the key to success, not only getting new customers, but keeping current customers happy and loaning.
To me, it seems that kiva is doing neither.

There are some generous people on Kiva from the thousands of loans to the people who give the spare money they have to give. They all inspire me as well as the entrepreneurs. I have written many an e-mail to those lenders. Here is one who is very wonderful not for the amount of loans but for her passion (note location Wolfgang and Mona). To me the key issue isn't who lends how much, or how many times. I, too, would find some statistical analysis of passing interest, including median figures, but I would hope that any such analysis would be stripped of identities. The curious among us can't help but noticing the same lenders coming up again and again on loans, and may click through to the lenders' pages and see how many loans they've made. Their generosity inspires. A question I can only ask of myself is whether I have done what I can, and of course Kiva fits into a larger picture of my personal budget for good works, as it does for everyone.
Many KFs have shared other areas where they are involved in charitable activity or other good works, and I suspect a significant percentage of Kiva lenders are similarly involved in trying to make the world a better place beyond their involvement in Kiva. The official motto of the Order of Canada, our highest honour (which has replaced peerages and knighthoods), is "Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam (They desire a better country)". And it is given to people who have put their energy into making that desire a reality in a particularly exemplary manner. I suggest that a similar motive, expanded beyond country to the world, is in operation in Kiva, and everyone who is involved, whether in making one loan or 10,000, is putting their energy and their money, to work to make a difference. If there were an honour system for Kiva, I would give an Order of Kiva to everyone at the first loan. It's not about how many loans any individual makes. Some can manage one loan, some can manage a thousand. What matters is that together, we Kiva lenders are capable of making a difference in people's lives. And I'm glad to be part of that in my own small way.
