I'll see if optimizing/limiting feeds to certain posts can be done as well.
Cool! The reason I think this is important is that there is a huge amount of noise (good and bad) in RSS feeds, so though the full feed is good for all of us and anyone interested, the "optimized feed" would be more attractive for a blogroll, showing only the "best" stuff. Not making a value judgment, just that I know from using other feeds that they tend to get "watery" Smiley

Hi Joe,

thanks for volunteering to do this FANTASTIC job to set up and maintain this site!

Quick question: Can you give us an estimate in actual costs that you will run to host this, beyond the volunteer time that you put in? I'm thinking about hosting costs, domain registration costs, etc. Please let us know if this is something you want us to help contribute to.

Thanks again,

Ramon

Thanks again everyone and Ramon. Great to have you here! I love your blog and the insights on your involvment with Kiva.

About costs, they have been minuscule to be quite honest, which is why I jumped at the chance to do it after a quick assessment. The forum software was free (thanks to SMF and all those programmers). I just had to crack open the code, figure out how it worked and customize it to fit our needs with Kiva themed options and graphics. The domain is $8.95 a year, from the GoDaddy registrar. And I used a promotional code so I actually got the first year for about $7.35 (love pinching pennies; more to put into Kiva). As for hosting costs, I currently maintain a dedicated web server that is about $200 a month. However, it pays for itself through my work as a local web designer. Since this project was piggybacked onto that server to take advantage of unused hosting resources available (instead of going out and paying someone like Yahoo Hosting $20/month), I consider the current hosting costs of KivaFriends $0.00/month.

So this entire project cost you Seven Dollars and Thirty Five Cents?! Shocked That is so awesome!!! Perhaps moreso is your honesty about it. I wondered why there wasn't a PayPal button anywhere to collect money for operating costs as was originally suggested on the Yahoo email exchanges.

Must say, when I saw that amount I decided to just let Joe pay for the whole thing himself.

And its very awesome!

Must say, when I saw that amount I was tempted for the first time to offer to pay for the whole thing myself.   Cheesy

Kivafriends.org scrambled and respelled is "Risk And Forgive."  Of course, it also can be respelled "Asked For Virgin" and "Darer of Vikings" and even "Vinegar For Kids" but those are a lot less interesting.

Hello Joe and everyone,
I love that this site exists; I look forward to reading and typing more. Joe, I feel like an idiot saying this, but I cannot figure out what or where the profile link is, so I can add to my member page and perhaps upload a photo as well. Could you, or someone, anyone, explain how I would do this? Make it Real Simple please. I won't feel insulted if you over-explain.
