Looks like Kiva contracted out the sending and tracking of it (plus tracking on what links we follow etc) to constantcontact.com.

WHAT?

Dottie B

Pardon, why the need to shout??

The email might have looked like it came from Kiva, and replies are sent back to Kiva (contactus@kiva.org), but the actual message if you dig into the header details actually come from in.constantcontact.com.

It is not unusual for even the biggest multinational company to use an external professional company to manage email spam promotions / newsletters.  To send that many emails, even if it is in batches does take some bandwidth and power.  You also need a system to allow people to unsubscribe, and the power / bandwidth to support the stat gathering about your recipients...

Kiva will be getting all sorts of facts, figures and stats from this little exercise - which is not a bad thing.  If you look at the links within the email they look fairly complicated, this is a way of seeing who clicked what link, number of link followed.  They probably also have a way to see if people actually received the email, when they opened it (how long it was left unopened!!).

Sounds like Kiva can gather quite a bit of info this way...hopefully they find it valuable and what they find shows that people found the newsletter worthwhile and effective.

I shout when I'm horrified. (As opposed to merely confused.)

My concern was the "tracking on what links we follow." Kiva links, fine. But I believe some cookies track all your computer use. I thought better of Kiva.

Dottie, I think you can rest easy on this one.  The tracking is limited to the links on this particular newsletter to see who and how many might find those items of particular interest.  There isn't even a cookie connected to it, let alone a tracking "spyware" that could track other things.

Anyone here still have the recent Kiva newsletter that arrived just before Christmas?  I accidentally deleted mine somehow and was hoping someone might be able to send me a copy of theirs, HTML version...if so, please send to akshara3000@msn.com...thanks to whomever Smiley

Whatever happened to the "Quarterly" newsletter?   Huh?

Did anyone see another one? I thought it was a good idea.

Maybe its a yearly newsletter from the looks of it--guess we'll find out around Christmas time--isnt that when the first one was sent out?  I wonder what sort of feedback they received from it and what, if any, analysis they did regarding user interaction with the email itself.  Would be interesting to know if more are forthcoming.
