My first post to KF was in the suggestion box, but later I thought it might be good to post it here as well. Product placement in TV shows is a big thing. What if a character in a TV show episode drank from a Kiva mug or wore a Kiva shirt? That would be great publicity. Several people have offered ideas such as "Look to the Stars--Kiva," which I didn't know existed, and a call for props people among Kiva Friends who might have an "in," just to name a few. I think any Kiva exposure would be great, from a local talk show host drinking from a Kiva mug to a character in a major drama or sitcom wearing a Kiva shirt or reading a book with a Kiva book cover (that's a great idea for lots of us!) So if anyone knows anyone who might help with this idea or if anyone can offer other thoughts on how to approach this, that would be great. Also, if you're going to be in the studio audience for a show and it's appropriate, consider wearing a Kiva shirt. Maybe the camera will focus on you, and Kiva!

Lynn,
Usually when you see soda, detergent or cereal boxes on a show or movie that is paid product placement. the more obviously the brand is shown, the more likely it is a product placement. With digital rework, they can really alter things after the scene is shot--adding say Trix or Wheaties or whatever brand pays highest onto the place where the box is.
I have read that on Survivor a guy had to remove the John Deere label from his hat. And all the rewards--cars and even the shampoos and soaps are paid endorsements. Showcasing products like this is very effective as viewers are not aware that they are being advertised to in the same way. We don't take a bathroom or snack break in the middle of a movie when the mom puts groceries away from the store.

Thanks for your response, Colette. Wow, I hadn't read about the John Deere hat deal. Since product placement is such a lucrative thing, I wonder if a show could even take some kind of tax write-off if they agreed to let a character drink from a Kiva mug or wear a Kiva hat. Maybe if they got the write off and a bit of positive publicity by someone like Nicholas Kristof of the NY Times, who has written about Kiva before, then they would be motivated to do it. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. One responder to my posting of this idea in the suggestion box area thought a "younger" station like MTV would be more likely to do it, but I'm not in that younger audience, so I'm not sure I would know how to approach that.

well - I'm not a celebrity however... I wore my Kiva t-shirt this morning - and as I stepped out of our neighbourhood Women In Need store - this lady came up to me and said... "Excuse me, but I noticed your shirt. I just heard about Kiva last night and it is such a coincidence to see the name again today. Is what I heard true?" Well, needless to say, my morning is running about 15 minutes late but we had a lovely conversation about my favourite topic. I came running in and told John - and told him to wait a minute for lunch - I just HAVE TO go tell everyone ! Lynn - my KivaNut friend - It Worked! jan ps now I just have to find a more prominent way to carry my Kiva tote bag
