I ran across a street called Kiva Drive in Sacramento, California.

Here's a link to the Google map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kiva+drive+and+Garfield+ave+sacramento,+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.025693,59.765625&ie=UTF8&ll=38.652304,-121.336656&spn=0.006971,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr

I've attached a picture as well.

Are there more Kiva streets out there?

Enjoy,

Larry

I never could resist a nice Google challenge   Cool

Kiva Street, Iselin, New Jersey
East Kiva Avenue, Mesa, Arizona
Kiva Court, Copperopolis, California
Kiva Avenue, Aztec, New Mexico
Kiva Road, Silver Spring, Maryland
Kiva Way, Gulf Shores, Alabama (leading to the Kiva Dunes Golf Course..)
North Kiva Lane, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Arizona
Kiva Circle, Windsor, Colorado
Kiva Drive, Gallup, New Mexico

yes, I know, I'll never get those 30 minutes of my life back.  It was worth it though, just to discover that there is a town called Copperopolis  Tongue

Peter,

There were quite a few Kivas in the southwest, so in another moment where curiosity became more important than finding the kitchen counter under the dirty dishes, I discovered...

Kiva is an underground or partly underground chamber in a Pueblo village, used by the men especially for ceremonies or councils.  Here is a link with both historical kiva photo and a modern version as well as more details for the incredibly curious...

Until age 12, I lived 3 miles from there, in Colonia, New Jersey.  Can't say I visited Kiva Street in my childhood, though.

One of my best friends has a white German shepherd named Kiva.  Kiva is probably 10 years old now, so she was around long before www.kiva.org!

Wow.  I decided to do a bit of research on penalties for street sign theft, but found much more interesting stuff on the way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_sign_theft

Note some of the reasons why people steal signs, and read some of the names on the pics.  I would so be &#%$@ out if I printed some of the words!

Also, someone has been held responsible for an accident after stealing the street sign!  If you enlarge the first picture of the back of the Illinois street sign, it tells how much the fine is.  Thinking that I could make a LOT of loans with that type of money...

Some day maybe this information will be useful, right?   Undecided

That was funny Colette...

Wish I had known about the town in Austria when I was a kid, could have used it for a defense against the bar of soap! Embarrassed

I've never found a street named Kiva but a few years ago when I was in Eagle River, Wisconsin there was a street named Pollyanna Ave. (Street, Road?). But as you can surmise, it was also a "Dead End".
I recommend asking the town council for a replica (the original) in recognition of Kiva's great work. Grrrrreeeaaaatttt. publicity stunt for the Sacramento.

Gee, and I lived two houses off of Inman Ave when I was a kid.  I don't remember a Kiva Street either.

All this time I've been wondering if the i in Kiva is pronounced as in liter or as in lighter. If you have streets and stuff with this name I suppose you'll have a pronunciation! So which is it?

Of course the name of kiva.org comes from Swahili. Anyone know how the Swahili word kiva is pronounced?

And isn't this an amazingly elegant way to hijack a thread almost without hijacking it?

It is pronounced "keevah" by its founders and staff, so that's the way I pronounce it also!  (Watch some of the videos on the Kiva.org site and it'll be obvious.)

So, that's like "liter" I would say.

Diane, what a relief, that's how I've pronounced it in my mind, I won't have to re-learn! Yes Thumbs Up I wonder how many people are squirming right now, the way I would have if it were like "lighter". No Pissy
