Paula:

I always post a comment to the journal as soon as a loan to which I was a contributor is disbursed. I have no evidence that the entrepreneur has ever seen my well-wishes. In only 2/168 disbursed loans has there been a journal entry from the MFI. One of those was merely a re-iteration of the loan poster, showing the loan as disbursed. No other comments were made. I too would appreciate hearing more from the MFI but I recognise that time and language/translation issues make this a remote possibility. I don't hold out much hope that I will hear from a borrower directly, but I've heard that a few Kiva lenders have had that experience. It has yet to happen to me.
I would to think that the entrepreneur knows that 'we care'. I say that because they are told that the money comes from us and that we don't get a penny from loaning to them. The journal enteries are evidence of that. Once their loans are repaid many express a great deal of gratitude to KIVA lenders. For the most part, I think that we are fortunate to have been able to make a positive difference in their lives and we have to be content with knowing that we did that.

I saw a Journal entry today whilst Browsing that deserved some sort of Congratulations from one of the lenders. A Loan was taken out on a 15 month payback term. The Borrower had done so well that she paid it back in just 3 months... WOW... I wanted to congratulate her on her success as no-one had seemed to notice but I am not a lender.. Do you think its appropriate to comment if you are not a lender??... Hmmm

Lisaky73:
Why not?
I question whether the borrower will ever see your comment since the loan has been repaid in full but there's no 'rule' about commenting on journal enteries, that I know of, anyway. Many do invite 'comments' presumably from anyone who cares to write one.

Lisa, I agree with Lorna. Of course you can't thank the borrower, but you can certainly say something about how impressed you are, or how happy you are for his/her sake, or anything that you feel that doesn't imply that you're a lender to that loan.

I agree with both Lorna and Ingvar.....a success story like that NEEDS to be acknowledged....so go for it!! I dont think it matters if you are a lender on the loan or not.

Hi, All  Smiley -
This (http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=4112) was one of my most personally satisfying responses:

Hello, Chimen - I just want to thank you for your first loan repayment. I hope that you have been able to buy your land and can now create your apple garden. I am proud to be a small part of your business. Best of luck and much success to you. Glenda in Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Just a thought..............
Maybe if more of us routinely posted comments (well wishes) to the borrowers it would start to create more of a dialog between the borrower and the lender.  Maybe also it would stimulate more journal entries.  Taking a personal interest in our entrepreneurs shows that this is more then a "money exchange" and that we are truly interested in their progress and success.  I am sure the MFI representatives are very busy and I do not expect volumes of journal entries but if we get more, than all the better.

Its definitely worth a shot Jane.  Maybe we can all make a collective effort to post comments on our future and/or current loans and wait and see if we discover a real difference.

WF Glenda, that's amazing!

You are now the second person I know of who's received a response from their borrower! That's so cool it's absolutely awesome! Thanks for reproducing the text, btw.
It makes it so special.
