ok, but i still have that security question....anyway to get rid of that?  Undecided

All right, here's one thing I discovered.

Kiva has changed its security posture so that pages are now served securely.  That means the URL links start with "https://" and not just the usual "http://", and it involves a new login page (which looks just the same as the old one).  If you access kiva.org directly and then select the "My Portfolio" page from the link on their main page, you will be properly directed to the secure login screen and are unlikely to have problems.  If, however, you get to kiva.org either from a bookmarked link, a hard-coded link on another website or blog, or (until a couple hours ago when Joe fixed it) through the My Portfolio button on kivafriends.org, you will instead go to the unsecured login screen which no longer works.  I've

Try using the My Portfolio button above now (refresh your page first -- Joe did fix it this morning), or go directly to kiva.org and sign in from there.  That may very well fix the problems you were having.

I've written to Kiva to highlight the inconsistencies (there are several hard-coded links to the old unsecured login page still on their site, and the Export button is broken as a result), and have asked them to consider adding some form of redirection for folks who arrive from the old page.  Try one of the two options above and see if that helps.

Wow Diane!  Thank you!!!  I was thinking it had something to do with those changes they made!  I have absolutely no techie knowledge though, so I'm not much use in the elucidation!  Laugh

 Thank You

I do however get asked a security question when I look at loans, "do you want to display the non-secure items" I answer yes, but then i have to reclick that loan.

I've reported this to Kiva, and doubtless others have as well. In IE, if I understand correctly, this is controlled by the security option Display Mixed Content:

Quote
• Display mixed content. This option specifies whether Web pages can display content from both secure and non-secure servers. This option has the following settings:

• Disable, which prevents Web pages from displaying non-secure content.

• Enable, which allows Web pages to display both secure and non-secure content.

• Prompt, which prompts users before allowing Web pages to display both secure and non-secure content.

I haven't checked the various releases, but for IE V6, this setting defaults to Prompt for all security options (low to high). You could make Kiva a trusted site and change this option to enable, but my tin hat tells me to leave it alone. I believe that this problem should be resolved at Kiva's end.

Perhaps Sherri could weigh in as to whether my understanding is correct and give an informed opinion as to the advisability of setting Display Mixed Content to Enable.

Hi Jane
to me this means...
that those of us not experiencing a security question must have answered a certain way - back when we created our account - you know - when we didn't really know what we were doing back then either Smiley
I'm with you - these guys are sometimes like Geordi La Forge on Star Trek - speaking English - but it's comes out gibberish to me...
at the same time - I say  Thank You cause sometimes they fix stuff I didn't even know was broke Smiley

Howdy All - here it is middle of July and I am still having trouble logging in.

Emailed the Kiva help techie and did not receive a reply.

1) I can get in some days and not others
2) adding the S did not resolve the problem  Sad
3) clicking into some other page eg. my Portfolio before logging in did not resolve the problem
4) restarting did not resolve the problem....
5) changing password via "forgotten your password" did not...wait for it! resolve the problem either...
aaargh!

Wondering if the Kiva Techies are still working on this and if we could get an email out to users about a sure fire fix to the problem. I am about to invite another preson to join via a gift certificate, but worry that it is all too hard they may not persevere!

in unity, Jude

PS:   Smiley the Spell Checker wants to change Kiva to Liva... maybe it can be added in Admin or something?

Hi Folks,

We've gotten lots of emails about these log in issues and have been trying to reproduce them here at Kiva so that we can help troubleshoot and get you logged in and lending again.

The Problem: Lenders go to http://www.kiva.org and click "Login" at the top of the page. The lender enters her email address and password and hits the "Login" button. One of two things happen:
A: The email and password fields clear information and do not allow access OR
B: The lender gets a white screen

As someone noted earlier on this thread these log-in issues are mostly due to the fact that we made some security upgrades to our website. Namely, we made our cookies more secure. And by cookies, I don't mean baked goods, but a piece of data that we send to your computer to create a secure log-in to Kiva that encrypts that data sent back and forth from our server to your computer and vice versa. For more information about cookies, check out the Wikipedia page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie

That said, we've noticed that the lenders who are still having difficulty logging in fall into two general categories:

1. Lenders using older web browsers: Most older web browsers aren't able to support the kind of security that we would like to provide. As a result anyone trying to access Kiva using Netscape or older versions of Internet Explorer (pre-6.0) may have difficulty logging into Kiva. Also, anyone using a more esoteric platform, such as WebTV may have difficulty logging in.

The Fix: Well, there's not much that can be done here except to ask you to upgrade to a newer web browser. All of the major web browsers are free. We've had reports of folks having difficulty logging in using Internet Explorer 7 (more on that later), but I haven't seen a single report of difficulty using Firefox 3 to log in. You can get Firefox 3 here (free download): http://www.getfirefox.com.

2. Lenders Running Internet Explorer 6 or 7 and Windows XP/Vista: These lenders are likely experiencing difficulty logging in because of their security settings. There are two separate configurable security settings for Internet Explorer 6/7. You'll see these in Tools>Internet Options. The first tab is the "Security" tab. If the security slider here is set to "High", lenders will not be able to log in. Next is the "Privacy" tab.  If the lender has the privacy settings set to either "Block all cookies" or "High" lenders will not be able to log in.

The Fix: There are two ways that we were able to fix this. The first is to add Kiva to your "Trusted Sites" list (Tools>Internet Options>Trusted Sites>Sites). The second is to set the sliders on both the "Security" tab and the "Privacy" tab to Medium-High. Using either of these methods should allow you to log in successfully.

I'm not aware of any lenders experiencing issues using the following web browsers: Firefox 3, the latest version of Opera or Safari. I also have not seen anyone using a Mac who has had these log-in issues.

If you try any of the above and you still have difficulty logging in, feel free to give me an email directly (gerard@kiva.org) and I'll do my best to help get you logged in and lending!

Thanks for your patience!

Jude - Kiva Friends is totally separate from Kiva and is run by Joe our selfless, courageous volunteer webmaster and host.  Many of us have laughed about the spell check not recognizing "kiva".  Either Joe still hasn't found time to fix these little things or the canned software being used doesn't easily provide for customization of the spell check function.
