Firefox is releasing its newest version today. As part of the Download Day they are attempting to set a world record for most downloaded software within 24 hours.

You can start downloading it at 10am PST (1pm EST, 5pm GMT) on this site: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/

If you use Firefox already, I'd highly recommend the upgrade. It features a nice performance improve and some nifty features. What I like most is the intelligent URL bar: As you begin to type a URL (or anything) it begins to search through sites you've browsed before. It doesn't just check the URL, but also the thread title or the name of your favorites.

Let's say you might want to find this thread again, simply typing "Firefox" would show you a list that included this thread. With a click (or using the "down" key) you could select it and go there. Makes it much easier to find something where you can't recall where you got it from!

edit: When you use Firefox 3, I'd highly recommend testing its full-screen mode. Just hit F11 to get in and out of it. To see the bar for URLs and your tabs, just move the mouse to the top of the screen and it'll come down.

I've been eagerly awaiting it!  Is the site you listed more likely to be available than the standard Mozilla site where the downloads normally are?

Seems everything related to Mozilla/Firefox crashed right now  Laugh
No doubt, they probably have 2-3 million people trying to access it.

I'm not sure where you're most likely to get it, but I think you can print a certificate if you download it from the headquarters.

In case anyone who is eager to get Firefox 3 is having trouble connecting to the usual places to get Firefox -- I know I was -- they might want to know I've just downloaded it and (successfully  Smiley ) installed it from Softpedia, with no waiting

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Mozilla-Firefox-Final-Download-5787.html

In case you are attached to your Firefox 2 add-ons and goodies of various kinds, I found the majority of mine don't work in Firefox 3.0, but I expect that will be rectified over the next few days.  The Google toolbar is already available for Firefox 3.

P

edit: I should have read the "Welcome to Firefox 3" tab before I posted that.  Turns out I've got Release Candidate 3, but the version number states 3.0 - so I'm confused.  Anyway, it will update itself in due course, so it's no big deal.  It does seem significantly faster than Firefox 2. The intelligent search on browsing history when typing things into the address bar seems like it will be really useful.

I wonder if it counts towards the Guinness World Record if you download it anywhere but from the spreadfirefox.com site...

News.com is reporting that there are problems delaying the launch but that the 24 hour period for the record will start when the download is available on the site...

the security features seem really impressive.  You can click on the "favicon" in the address bar and it gives you a quick report on who you're connected to, with a link through to the fuller report, which incidentally tells you how many times you've connected to this site before.  Hmmm, 1026 visits to Kiva,org...

There've been 13 downloads of Firefox 3.0 so far in Tajikistan today.  And 120 in Kenya, 78 in Azerbaijan, 17 in Uganda, 30 in Tanzania, 35 in Mozambique, 117 in Nepal, 73 in Cambodia, 38 in Sudan... and 2 in Sierra Leone!  And a thousand or more in Vietnam, Bosnia, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Ecuador... and many thousands in Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, and Ukraine.

Somehow this makes me feel quite warm inside.

But none in Chad.

I'm using it now, and it's a noticeable improvement.  For those of you using Firefox, the upgrade is painless.  My Firefox 2 session was even restored when I started Firefox 3.  Very good.

There's a counter with the total downloads as well as downloads per minute: http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/

As I'm typing this, they're at over 3.5m downloads, or 11,400/minute. Pretty impressive.
