Evelyn is seeking refinancing for a sixth loan to invest into making improvements to her home (building a new room). She has worked as a teacher at the César Augusto Salinas Pinell School for the past 10 years. She has an 11-year old daughter who is in fifth grade. Her husband works in construction and they share the household expenses. In addition, she helps to take care of her elderly parents. Evelyn has high hopes of personal success, is very responsible, and an educator who loves her work since she helps many children learn to read and write in an urban zone of New Guinea. Her dreams include finishing her degree in Education Sciences, having stable employment, good health, living in a home with better conditions. She is thankful to AFODENIC, since the previous credits have allowed her to slowly improve her living conditions.

Hermelinda is 26 years old, married, and has an 8-month-old daughter who is her reason for being. Born to agricultural parents, her childhood was spent living and playing amongst the plants, sometimes helping out her parents, which is why she has never stopped planting. A year ago she planted bananas and 5 years ago she planted citrus fruits, which she is now harvesting. Six months ago she worked as a facilitator for the government program PRONAMA, teaching adults to read. She enjoyed teaching, which is why she now wants to be a teacher for another government program and, at the same time, continue working her small farm (chacra), which she wouldn't leave for anything. She is a new MFP client. With the loan money she will hire helpers for the chacra and immediately plant corn, then coffee; this work will cost her approximately 800 soles.

Pilar Papa lives on Franz Tamayo street in the 16 de Julio zone in the city of El Alto. She is a single mother that lives with her 10 year old son. She works as an elementary school teacher in a small school in the area. The loan will be used to purchase a computer, which will allow her to improve the instruction of her students by showing information in class, having a record of homework assignments, etc. This is her first loan with Impro, but an analysis was performed that qualifies her for the loan.

12 months loan from IMPRO, Bolivia (5*)
Only 25 $ left to fund (but I bet there will soon drop out more from someone's basket as only 13% are really raised)

Thanks!

Thank you so much for the heads up about the Pilar loan, Mona. This is only the second time I get to invest in something that ends up in an educational setting!

Nanay Flordeliza Isod is a resident of Brgy. Poblacion Norte, Sitio Igcaputol, Tobias Fornier Antique. She is married to Ricardo Isod and has two children. Currently, Nanay “Flor” is busy with her small business buying and selling tobacco just to earn the means of living every day. When she received a small amount of capital from ASHI, she managed to put it all into her business. For her, business is an important factor, and she does not want to be a problem for her group mates or for the center. Nanay Flor came from a very poor family; she was the sixth of ten children. She was the luckiest among her siblings to attend school because of her determination. Nanay Flor believes that education can lift you from poverty, and that’s why she is now a Day Care teacher who teaches the children to read and write. Nanay Flor manages her obligation as a teacher and is a very good member of ASHI. She performs well in her business; when she has enough capital, she adds more business in order to gain more income. She hopes to share this with her children and grandchildren. Nanay Flor got married at the age of 19, a marriage arranged by her parents. She did not want to marry, but she had no choice but to accept it in respect to her parents. Nanay Flor strives very hard so that what she experienced will not be experienced by her children and grandchildren in the future.

A farmer and teacher by profession, David Mugizi cultivates coffee on his land in Rushozi-Kabwohe. David plans to use the loan to purchase more coffee plants for his farm so as to work towards his dream of being the owner of a large coffee plantation that will qualify him for obtaining a tender to supply coffee beans to the coffee factories for a lump sum.

However, the sky is not the limit for David. He also holds the vision of being the founder of a modern primary school that will offer quality education to students. This loving father of 5 children aged 20-27 years has ensured that his children get the best education and now 4 of them are working. He is only left with 1 child at the university. With the hope that the loan will help his business grow, David has no doubt that his last-born will successfully graduate from the university.

This isn't exactly an education loan for the entrepreneur, but it sure is for her kids  Thumbs Up

Mary Anger [nope, not a typo]

Mary Anger runs a grocery store and is requesting a loan to buy more stock. Mary is 32 years old and married. Her husband also runs the grocery store. She has two children who do not go to school. With the extra profits generated by this loan, she hopes to be able to send the children to school.

Rather unrelated, but I think the paragraph below the business description is fairly new.  I like it  Smiley
BRAC's holistic approach to poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor encompasses a range of core programs in economic and social development, health, education, and human rights and legal services which are delivered through an extensive network of village organizations. BRAC has become one of the world's largest NGOs as measured by the scale and diversity of its interventions. In 2007, BRAC started operations in southern Sudan. The microfinance program, which is targeted towards returning war refugees, has already formed 418 village organizations with more than 14,000 women members.

Wow... Shocked   GREAT work, BRAC Sudan.

These are teachers from the Baptist Model Primary School in Makeni. Baptist was founded in September 1984 by the Baptist Mission. It has a total of 449 pupils currently enrolled in the school and a total of thirteen staff. Baptist Primary School always prides itself on its good results on the National Primary Schools Exams (NPSE). In 2004, for example, they produced the one student with the best testing results in the entire district. This is Baptist’s first loan with SMT. They heard of SMT from colleagues in other schools who have benefited greatly from SMT’s services. The use of the loan varies amongst the teachers. Some of the staff members will start a small business. Those who are already small business owners will invest the loan into their businesses. Some of the staff members will be using the loan to buy pieces of furniture for their domiciles and others plan to pay either for their children’s education or to pursue further studies themselves. Government salaries are usually quite small for teachers, thus making teaching an unattractive profession for many whose primary motivator is money. Many choose other jobs over teaching because of the small salary, thus starving the field of qualified personnel to teach the children. The few who remain in the classroom have to find other ways of making ends meet. The vast majority of them, engage in either business or agriculture or they provide extra tutorial classes for the children (though this is a practice the government is trying to stop). Needless to say, loans from SMT are a great help to the teachers in order to boost their businesses or invest it in something productive. Many want to go to school but could not afford the cost. Some will want to buy pieces of furniture, but their monthly salary is not enough to let them do so. With a loan, they will be able to meet some of these needs. And with their monthly salaries, they can repay easily via a payroll deduction type of system Fifty-three year old David E. Turay (right) is the head teacher at the Baptist School. David was born in Makama in Makeni City. He is married with seven children – one in primary school, four in secondary school, one in college and the oldest is an adult working for a living. David will use his loan to pay college and school fees for his children.

Teachers trying to keep their teaching jobs AND send their kiddies to school?!  Yay for education loans!  Thumbs Up

Dienona Yantil is one of the hardest working women we have met, not the least reason is she's the proud mother to 12 children! However, having 12 children brings a lot of expenses, and when you are living in extreme poverty it is very difficult to pay all those expenses. Dienona came to Esperanza International in need of help, hoping to receive a loan to help start her own business.

With her first loan she started a small school in her area and received enough students to pay back all her loans and also start educating her kids. Since that first loan, she has taken out three other loans and is now seeking her fifth. She has increased the size of her school and can now afford to start saving money while also helping many kids get a quality education. The best part is she is able to teach all her children, and hopefully help them have a better future and get out of their poverty. She is very happy with what she does and wants to keep increasing the size of her school. She dreams of having a giant school teaching thousands of kids and hiring more teachers.

She is excited about this next loan and knows it will help her continue reaching her dreams!

"5-month" loan through 4-star Esperanza (Dominican Republic).  $650 remaining to fund as of now.

No explanation about which in the group photo is Dienona Yantil and whose name is on the group name. Smiley
