Mabel is a young mother and businesswoman. She is a member of the Women in Progress comunal bank which meets in the city of Portoviejo every 15 days.

Mabel has been married for 6 years and has a 5 year old daughter. Her husband is a pharmaceutical salesman and medical sales representative. She sells Yanbal beauty products. She's been doing this for 2 years and likes what she does. With this new loan, she'll be able to invest some of the money to purchase new products, and with the rest she'll improve her home.

Our partner Mabel, aside from being an excellent businesswoman, is also dedicated to her studies. She's currently studying languages at the Technical University of Manabi. Her dream is to complete her studies and become a language teacher. Mabel spends her mornings selling her products, taking advantage of the time that her daughter is in school. For the most part, her clients are office workers downtown, and also home makers in different parts of Portoviejo.

Kamala wants to buy books for her students.

Kamala is 44 years old and lives in Baku city. She is married and has two daughters aged 12 and 18. She tutors students in Azerbaijani history and helps older students prepare for university examinations. Kamala works eight hours every day from her home. She loves teaching and thinks that all children in Azerbaijan should know their history.
Kamala is requesting a loan of 2,000 AZN to buy books for her students. She would like to have at least one book for every two students. She has many students and so needs many books.

Mustafa is a student at Al-Quds Open University. He lives in Bethlehem and works while studying so he can afford to pay his tuition fees and contribute to his family's household expenses.

Mustafa saved a good amount of money and then took a $3,000 loan from FATEN to start a small restaurant near the students residences. The area is in need of a restaurant, because the closest restaurant is 30 minutes away. Mustafa will use the loan to purchase needed cooking tools and machines. With the profit from his restaurant, he can pay his tuition fees and other expenses and help his parents pay for their household expenses.

It certainly looks like he's been there a while... that cushion has gradually been pushed almost off the chair.
I think he has a look that says...
I've been waiting here all day and you *finally* get around to taking my photo?

"You want me to what?"
I'm surprised he's smiling at all  Cool

There are probably places a young man would rather be than sitting around waiting to take out a loan to allow him to work harder?  Wonder who's running his business ... or is he having to skip school?

"Toktobu Satybaldieva, 23 is single and works as a PC operator. She lives in a village and wants to obtain a good college education so that she will be able to go to the capital and find better employment. She hopes to obtain this loan and apply for college to get a degree in economics."

Unfortunately, this loan comes from Mol Bulak (Kyrgyzstan), and the country's recent troubles have been well documented. On the one hand, the long awaited update about the partner's status is still pending. On the other hand, Mol Bulak has resumed posting loans, which might be a good sign despite the lack of information. Personally I think I'll wait for 07/15 to get credits and see whether the partner resumes repayments, but I thought the education part could use some highlighting, with a few words of caution.

Uranbileg Bor

Uranbileg opened a foreign languages training center called Happy Friends in 2007. Uranbileg is a polite and well-educated woman who wants to expand her business by publishing more efficient and useful textbooks and manuals for her students. She is requesting a 4,000,000 MNT loan to print out language training DVDs and textbooks to sell, thus increasing her profit margin.

Here's a lovely way to help the good folks of Haiti as well as our environment:

Green Education Project Posted on Zafen

https://www.zafen.org/en/projects/336

"A donation of $1000 will start a new educational program with a focus on teaching children about sustainable agricultural methods. The funding will support the one-year cost of an agricultural technician who will help the children grow 1000 trees, as well as the set-up costs of a fruit tree nursery at the school. The training will be included as part of the school curriculum for the school year 2010-2011. That’s not all! To facilitate the implementation of the project and to secure its sustainability, EDEM Foundation (www.edem2.org) will help build liaisons between Ecole du Village and elementary schools in the US. The partnership between the school and will allow the children in Haiti to protect the environment while the children at their partner school help support the program."

Check out this merry band of teachers
  • Nurgul is a teacher of history
  • Cholpon works as a teacher of Russian language and literature
  • Chinarkul works as a teacher of Kyrgyz language
  • Rahat works as a teacher
  • Syrga works as a librarian

Rahat also says that "her salary is not very high" which somehow comes as less than a shock to me.
