Well, since we've had two different people appeal to KFers with soon-to-expire
loans, how about we start a thread devoted to those loans?

I'll start things off by pasting in mine and then Michael's appeals, with
links to the originals. So then we can maybe use this thread for that
purpose? Maybe? Huh?

... I know we've been talking about construction loans, and I understand
the difference between subsistence existence, the importance of
loans to entrepreneurs and then the loans that are stated up front
that they are for home construction. I've been thinking a lot about
this lately, and I've come around a bit on it.

One thing: As a person who is lucky enough to own her home, I feel
funny denying someone else the opportunity to improve their
dwelling. Geez, for $25 I can maybe buy one can of paint or
I can help someone improve their house in some way. People in
my country take out home-improvement loans all the time,
and no one thinks a thing about it.

Another thing: I appreciate the fact that these folks are honest in stating the purpose of
the loan. It could be that the end goal of someone who asks
for a business loan for their grocery store is so that they can
work on their home, but the request is not worded that way, so
I'm ignorant of what they do with their money. Often, the loan
is worded such that I know how many sacks of flour or pigs or
auto parts will be bought with the money, but they don't say
what they will do with those profits.

So here are my ... home improvement loans in Nuevo Laredo.
Those of you who have been there know it ain't a fancy town and
these houses don't look overly luxurious. I hope the loans get filled.
I think they will. (I like the first person aspect of these requests,
by the way.)...
...
Here's the 1 o'clock [July 1] update on Martha, Felipe and Librado.
Librado's loan is almost as old, also ready to expire and is also in Nuevo Laredo.
All are 12-month home improvement loans.

Martha still needs $400.

Felipe's loan is $500 away from being filled.

Librado's plan to make his home safer for his family needs $600 -- well, 575 when I sign on.

I'm trying to think what we could accomplish at our house -- the Sainted Spouse and I --
for the total of these loans, $3,600. Not much.

Rustam's loan request is not that large - - only $825.  But with only 7 days left (as of 7/1) his loan is only half-subscribed.  It's not the best write-up and the picture is not informative of his surroundings.  But it's a 5 star MFI and it's not a group loan.  Six months repayment.
Any takers?

Whew!

Martha Patricia Lira Rivera's home improvement loan in Nuevo Laredo just got filled. Yay!

The two remaining loans, Felipe's (3 days left) and Librado's (4 days), still need
$525 and $575 respectively, but I now have faith that these two requests will
be met. The Kiva community takes care of folks.

Now, onto a couple of groups of nice people from Cambodia
and then our friends, the Tajikistani and Azebaijani farmers......

Thanks,

Ann

Hi Ann:

Just a side note (and it is not to say that there is no poverty in Canada) - we crossed the border at St Croix /McAdam a few years back and started heading into Maine.  After a few miles,we noted old dilapidated trailers with plastic on the windows - of course we thought they were abandoned but after 3 or 4, we noticed that there was a light on in one of them and people living in it. We couldn't believe it - this was in early May and there was still snow in the woods.

And I'm sure the same exists in places here in Canada, And yet here we are trying to help others in foreign countries.  We indeed are a strange breed ..... I wonder if the Gov of Maine is aware of such conditions and even if he was, what would he do about it?

You would have been crossing into Washington County, Maine.
It is said to be the poorest county in Maine (or close to it?),
and one of the poorest in the U.S. That's where we live.
Lots of unemployment, lots of companies folding up tents and moving away.
Very vulnerable to the lure of Big Money from shysters
such as the LNG folks from Oklahoma who came to town
promising lots of good jobs for everyone and gold pouring
down the streets. Thankfully, they seem to be losing their pull.
It's taken a lot of teamwork from folks on both sides of the
border. Now, Saint John is already
an industrial city -- heavy industry belongs there. I have
little gripe with the LNG going to Saint John. But the
few jobs that are left here are related to fishing and
tourism, and both would be killed off by LNG tankers.
Oh, that was a rant. Sorry. Sort of.

So yes, this is the county that produced the high
school seniors to whom my husband and I gave
Kiva gift certificates to this year. I'm sure many of them
think that they are the poorest, most pitiful things that
ever lived. So far, though, about a fifth of them have
indicated that they will use the certificates, which
is way more than I'd expected. And I'll follow up on
the rest later in the summer.

Forget the governor. Baldacci knows how poor Maine is. I'd
like that -- pause to sputter -- that Person who lives in
the White House to see how his so-called Fellow Americans
are living. Next time he comes to play with his folks
down state, he could come to see how the Other State
of Maine is. Likely, huh?

Whew. I'm exhausted. Aren't you glad you asked!!!

I like Maine - love the Boothbay Harbour area especially.

Why have you lived in so many states - you must be a real annoyance to all the neighbours and you keep getting run out of town ...right .... Laugh

Yeah, I keep nagging them about my Kiva loans about to expire ---

Felipe
http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=50084
and
Librado
http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=50087&_tpos=1&_tpg=1

--- and they just start shooting at me!

I prefer our end of Maine to the Other one, downstate.
Plus, I get twitchy when the CBC One signal starts fading out on my car radio.

That would be Felipe and Librado.

Hi abc,

I logged onto Kiva after a bit of an absence, distributed the credit I had in my account and then noticed a link to this forum. I found your post and based on what you've written I chipped in the final $25 for Felipe, he looks like a cool dude!

Felipe is raised, and Librado needs $75.  He'll be funded tonight.
