I am posting as a follow-up to a discussion in Anything Goes about a new loan from Mozambique:

http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=17861

I too am bothered by this Mozambique loan for a car.  There is something missing here that a car loan in one of the poorest countries in the world can get repaid in only three months. And there is no mention of how this can be repaid.

The loan write-up is extremely skimpy (giving the benefit of the doubt maybe this is due to the need to get loans processed).

Further, this says this is this person's first loan.  Usually, MFIs give small loans to a borrower and let them prove themselves before they "graduate" to a larger loan.  I am very interested in Mozambique and am quite disturbed that this should be a sample of what is to come from this MFI.  Cry

I looked at all the loans from FDM (Fundo De Desenvolvimento Mulher).  That was the only "transportation" loan.  To me, this one looks like a "sweet sixteen" loan subsidized by Dad.  Definitely not the "get-me-out-of-poverty" type loan we expect to see.

I am concerned about the car loan for two reason.  The first is that it is not the type of loan that I would expect on Kiva.  The second reason is that Kiva has all of this great publicity and people are coming to the site with a certain mind set.  When they see this loan which is not the normal one for Kiva, they may think that Kiva is not what it is presented to be.  I would not want any negative publicity to undo what the last week has accomplished.

Not a good poster girl for Kiva, but also remember it was up for about a nanosecond in the grand scheme of things.

The auto loan is fishy.  The Gross domestic product is less than $1500/yr/person, yet this loan is for $1125 with a three month payback.  Could it be a relative of the powers in charge?  Is it a test of the system?  Is the business so unsavory/illegal that it cannot be mentioned?  It smells like some of the WITEP loans--out of whack with common sense--in the numbers don't feel right.

This is strictly speculation on my part but I wonder if, as a result of the Oprah show that generated over 10 000 new potential lenders & with no prospects available, that as a result Kiva might be tempted, not deliberatly but subconsciously, to maybe take more of a chance to accept borrowers that they might not normally consider?

I mean, there were 61 borrowers listed on Tueday night which were gone by the next day & only replaced by a handful here and there for the rest of the week.

I don't think all those borrowers from Mexico with pretty large loan requests & prectically no takers would've been grabbed as fast as they were without the influx from the Oprah show.

Who do I loan to?

Well, for starters, I loan to women. Women are still second class citizens (if that) in much of the world and I like to help them out where I can.

Beyond that? I am a complete sucker for anyone who wants help in keeping the local craft traditions alive. Also, any woman in Iraq or Afghanistan would get a loan from me very easily. Beyond that, I just look for someone who catches my eye.
