While in Dallas this past weekend we happened upon a unique way to raise money for a local cause.  It was a lot of fun, and raised about $3,000 in roughly an hour at a cost of ----  well, I'd say no cost involved at all.

This made me start thinking of things local 'we' (some of the groups and charities I support) could be doing.  So, with this thread, I'm looking for ideas you've been a part of or you know about that are unique or 'off the wall' ways to raise money.  Sky's the limit here, I have some really varied groups to offer your ideas to!

Henry,

Silent Auction or Auction
See's Candy (holidays are great)
Entertainment Book
Chinaberry Books  (For kid groups)
Dime A Dip (although that should probably be more now)
IGive (hehehe)
Hire a Helping Hand (made this up, but individuals offer yard or pet or other services paid to organization)
Music night--one teenager sang and raised thousands in a night for orphans in Mexico
Garage sale--one group in San Jose (about 12-20 families) raised hundreds by selling their used baby stuff
Restaurants--some offer 10% or more if you dine on a given night.

My husband last week was in a drag beauty pagent.  All the different businesses in town each chose a male contestant to dress in drag and participate in the pagent.  The audience puts money in the purse of the contestant they support when they go around with their purse soliciting donations right after the talent competition.  The contestant who raises the most money wins.  It's super funny.  And raised TONS of money.  My hubby only placed second and I know he alone had over 500 dollars in his purse.  Add together all the contestants, and you've got a lot of cash.

well, I didn't exactly say!

but it went something like.....

underwear was modeled and while it was being modeled it was auctioned off.  Cheesy
all underwear was donated to the cause.

I think there were 17 models - all shapes, sizes, and sexes - some better than others!
But, it was a riot, I imagine similar to the redstarr's beauty pagent.  Some of the models had us rolling in the floor.  Models were family/friends/supporters of the cause.  (nothing toooooo sexual about the event)

Redstarr, that sounds like a very fun activity.  Good for your husband for being a great GREAT! guy!   In high school, the football players each year had something similar, I had forgotten about that event also.

Auction pre skidmarked undies? You Americans ARE lazy.  Laugh
Sounds like a lot of fun. I can allmost hear the laughter.

When winter retreats, leaving a thick layer of sand and dust, owners of gasstations and other large areas sometimes can pay to get firefighters to hose the place clean. Money then going to some good cause. And also an excellent way to check if firehydrants and other waterdeliverysystems work properly.

Oh, isn't that cheating?  Grin

We also have a day where highschool- and collegestudents rent out their labour for a day, for a fixed price, say around 50 USD. Private households can get them to clean the garage, cut grass, clean house etc. Firms can get them to pick up litter, paint or any other jobs that does not involve a healthrisk. The "employers" are welcomed to pay more, but not urged to do so. It all goes into a nationwide pot, to be donated to one humanitarian organization or project their student-organizations have agreed upon in advance.

Another one, could be for a group of people to sell adspace on themselves. This offcoarse will work best in urban areas, but even in rural districts the eyeopenereffect should not be underestimated. So companies can buy adspace on say 50 people, who then will go about their business around town, in the predesigned T-shirt that predefined day.

I would pay $50 bux to see Geoff in this get-up.

EDIT:  "this get-up" means the 'in-drag' part.
