Don't worry, I'm not referring to Monty Python this time (though it's probably a good idea to remind you that the Monty Python Quiz 2.0 will close in about 12 hours: http://www.kivafriends.org/index.php/topic,2317.20.html).

Classical music lovers on KF:

The BBC Proms 2008 are about to begin!

18 July to 13 September 2008

At least 84 concerts, all broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 (livestream: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio3.shtml) and available to listen on demand for a further week on http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2008.

I am envying all those in London or close enough to attend - standing tickets on the day for GBP 5. Many of the world's best orchestras, choirs, soloists and conductors.

Some highlights I am particularly looking forward to:

I Fagiolini, Barokksolistene, Robert Hollingworth

Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 / R Strauss Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche

Theatre of Voices, Paul Hillier

* Prom 41, Saturday 16 August, 6:30 PM BST: Handel Belshazzar

Sir Charles Mackerras

* Prom 43, Sunday 17 August, 7:30 PM BST: Mozart Symphony No.34 in C, K338 / Vaughan Williams Flos Campi / Nigel Osborne Flute Concerto /
Beethoven Mass in C
Rebecca Evans / Pamela Helen Stephen / Thomas Walker / Matthew Rose / Sharon Bezaly flute / Lawrence Power viola

* Prom 44, Monday 18 August, 7:30 PM BST: Elliott Carter Soundings (UK premiere) / Prokofiev Symphony-Concerto / Beethoven Symphony No.6, 'Pastoral'
Nicolas Hodges piano / Alban Gerhardt cello, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ilan Volkov conductor

* Prom 51, Sunday 24 August, 7 PM BST: J S Bach St. John Passion (sung in German)
Mark Padmore / Peter Harvey / Katherine Fuge / Robin Blaze / Nicholas Mulroy / Jeremy Budd / Matthew Brook, Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists, Sir John Eliot Gardiner [[how I wished to be there]]

I will stop here, but there are many, many more...

Have fun, take care,
Wolfgang.

and for something completely different again............

one Prom that I have definitley earmarked is Prom No 17 on Weds 30th July which is the World Music Celebration.

Bassekou Kouyate from Mali is a particular favourite of mine.   He is a master of the Malian ngoni which is a type of lute.   I've seen Justin Adams (UK) and Juldeh Camara (Gambia) perform too.  Camara plays a one-string ritti fiddle.

Just a reminder:

In about 90 minutes (1 pm BST), the 2nd Chamber Prom will commence with a Monteverdi programme sung by the marvelous I Fagiolini - some of you might know them from their show/film "The Full Monteverdi", broadcast live on BBC Radio 3:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio3.shtml

And afterwards available for one week as "listen on demand" on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search/radio/?q=Proms

Tonight's Prom (7:30 pm BST) is also interesting with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony in the second half.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.
