You can zoom in to see individual loans, though Google Maps seems to have to work very hard to do that, and it's quite a slow process.

All lender profiles loaded with the exception of Matthew's and Kay's, which both lead after a brief delay only to Kiva's "oops" page - not even list view is accessible.  I think their 4000+ loans each might have defeated Google Maps....

It might be your browser. Things are snappy for me and Good Dogg's and Kay's pages load for me too. Although from this image, Good Dogg's lender map makes it look like he's re-foresting most of Africa.

Thanks Scott.  It was my browser.  Goodbye Firefox, hello Opera, in which Map View works fine...

Just spotted this at the bottom of the Kiva Homepage: http://www.kiva.org/kivavision

Every 30 seconds or so and you get to see a new lender appear

Set your browser to full screen and you have a Kiva Screensaver showing lender locations and why they lend  Cool

kivavision - very cool

But, there's a but, possibly quite a large one from the point of view of Kiva's commitment to users' privacy.

For every lender shown on kivavision, their full name is given, including surname.  I've checked that out on quite a few by clicking through to the lender's profile, where surnames are almost invariably not disclosed.

P

edit: this is not good.  Purely as an experiment, I've just discovered the full street addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth of three Kiva lenders chosen at random. The ones with less common surnames are of course the easiest to track down.

this is not good.

Shocked You are right, does not look good at all.

I had missed that they are giving away loads more detail than on the lender page, and as you have pointed out easily enough to discover more.

Then I started to wonder if these people might have given permission to be on this map, digging into the code I suspect not - it seems to be the last 200 lenders who have signed up: http://www.kiva.org/rss/loanbecause

I agree, Peter and Christopher.

Shall we tell them, or rely on them browsing this thread or discovering for themselves?

Take care,
Wolfgang.

I think they should be tipped off, it might take a while for a Kiva staffer to discover this thread, or for Kiva's technical people to realize the privacy implications.

I've sent an email to contactus at kiva.org, and since it seems like something that they might want to address pretty soon, have copied it to Sam Mankiewicz, Kiva's CTO.
