This thread will collect photographs of machines used by KIVA entrepreneurs around the world - with an emphasis on machines used in small-scale enterprises - particularly those that have evolved to meet local needs.

To avoid duplicates and facilitate searching , please leave subject line as is and add the country & purpose of machine.

Notes: Mr. Sohan needed a loan to construct a new hall for his rice grinding machine which he uses to produce rice meal for his village.

Name: Puy Chamnan
Location: cambodia
Notes Phum Ban, age 23, is a housewife. Since 1998, her husband, Mr. Puy Chamnan, has had a business hiring a grinding mill for the local people to take off the husks on rice. Most of the people in the village are poor. They do not have enough money to own a grinding machine, so they have to hire Phum's family whenever take have to take the husks off the rice.

 

Name: Proeng Chantha
Location: Cambodia
Notes Proeng Chantha is a 28-year-old farmer who earns around $2 per day farming and selling rice in her village. Her husband makes about $3 per day grinding rice for his customers and selling ground rice.

 


Name: Lay Chan Ry
Location: Cambodia
Notes Lay Chan Ry, 25, has been grinding rice crops for the last four years and typically makes US$3 each day. She lives in Prey Veng with her husband, Nou Noeung, their two children, and her parents

Notes: Mary Ayodele's determination is evident as she uses one grinding machine to care for herself and to support her husband and her home. She is 56 years old, and she has seven children. She grinds peppers, tomatoes and beans.
 

Name: Tawai Mashood
Location: Nigeria
Notes Mrs. Tawai Moshood is 35 years old, she is married with 6 children, and she lives in Benin City. She grinds pepper, beans and tomatoes for people living in her community. She learnt the business from her mother. She is requesting for a loan of $475 to enable her to buy a additional grinding machine and foodstuff for sale so she can help her family.
 

Name: Titilayo Oladiapo
Location: Nigeria
Notes Titilayo Oladiapo is a 45 year old married mother of 4. She is from Lagos State, Nigeria. She sells drinks, provision, food and has machine for grinding of tomatoes for her customers.

Notes: She sells cereals such as wheat, peas and barley, which she gets during the harvest and also buys in large quantities in different ranches. She also has some machines to grind cereals to make barley flour, wheat flour and maizemeal among others.
 

Name: Eleuteria Espinola
Location: Peru
Notes: She has a meat, chicken and guinea pig purchasing and selling business. She also sells fresh cheese. Finally she sells cereals like barley and wheat during harvesting season and she owns a mill which she uses to grind and sell these cereals as flour.

Over the years her business has been increasing, and she has been able to offer a better service with good mill machines. She grinds all type of products like cacao, corn, different grains, etc.

Location: Nicaragua
Notes: Señor Blanco is married and a father of two children. He is also the owner of a mill, which has been operating daily for over fifteen years. In his mill, Señor Blanco prepares the corn meal that is used to make tortillas. He is visited every day by about fifteen tortilla makers and sellers who come to his business to grind the corn meal for their tortillas. He is requesting a loan to buy pieces necessary for the upkeep of his mill. He hopes that by repairing his mill, it will stop giving him problems, and he won't need to stop operations, which causes him to lose a lot of his income.
 


Name: Hermenejilda Portillo
Location: Nicaragua
Notes: Hermenejilda Portillo is a woman that with much effort along with her husband works providing a mill service to her customers. This allows her to improve the structural condition of her house, which being in bad shape due to tremors and hurricanes is a danger to her family and children that live in it.

One coconut costs Rp. 1,000 (about $0.1). . . . .  He needs Rp 3,000,000 (about $318) to repair the broken grinding machine .....

Notes: This business has helped Ifoly to pay for his university studies: he has been studying Business at the local university. His services are helping many families in his community. However, the capacity of the current mill (10 horsepower) is not sufficient to meet the clients' demand. Ifoly is requesting a loan of US$1000. He is planning to purchase a 30-horsepower mill which would be efficient and capable of meeting the demand generated by the increasing number of clients. His dream is to make business his life-long career.
