I truly think we should act according to this principle:
1. take care of your own needs and be selfsufficient
2. help those around you
3. reach further out
Hard to practise - I wish I had a Kiva for my neighbourhood.

Good thought Dagfinn. I think the problem for many is to get stuck in #1. How much is enough? How much is really a "need" (especially in a world view perspective)?
I think perhaps to say it another way is:
1. To view yourself as a steward of resource and good things, using that portion as is necessary for you to be self-sustainable.
2. To respond to the opportunities to use those resources most productively in helping others (leveling the playing field?).
3. To live life in such a way as to increase those opportunities to use those resources (broaden our perspectives).
For me, Kiva is one clear way to increase the opportunities to share the resource.
