I was interested by this that recently appeared on the (Advanta) Kiva B4B Blog:

The KIVA AFFILIATE PROGRAM - Helping Kiva & Making Some Money

I know it sounds cliche, but the Kiva Affiliate Program is a real 'WIN-WIN' for affiliates and Kiva. If you're not familiar with what an affiliate is, in this context, it's someone who uses their blog or website to encourage people to sign up for the KivaB4B credit card. For every approved application, an affiliate earns from $65-$85 AND, with this unique program, Advanta makes a $25 donation to Kiva in the affiliate's name.  To get started, you need go through a registration process .  .  .

Registration is open to owners of blogs, websites, discussion boards etc.

As the Advanta KivaB4B card is officially blessed by Kiva, on reading about this it immediately crossed my mind to wonder whether there's any merit in the idea of KivaFriends.org signing up to the Kiva Affiliate Program.  Any revenue from it would presumably help cover server etc costs, and any surplus might be available for KF "projects", or Kiva loans?  I can think of a couple of possible objections, but I'll leave those for others to articulate.  In any case, the decision would be Joe's alone, as he owns the KF site.

Could be the Kiva Affiliate Program might be of interest to some Kiva Friends who operate their own websites?  One concerning a well-known Swedish make of car springs to mind...

I think I know a place like that! The good news is that this is a seriously generous offer from Advatana with over $100 of booty in the bounty.  Thumbs Up The bad news is, well, I could go on and on and on about Internet advertising.  Thinking While I started 'a well-known Swedish make of cars' enthusiast group on the Internet back in 1988, I only started accepting advertising in 1996, but since then, I've tried just about everything short of pop up and pop behind advertising.

For affiliate programs to work, you need two things, in general.

  • A Very Large Pool of Potential Purchasers
  • An Affiliate Campaign that Matches the Site Content

So, on my site, the only affiliate program that ever did anything worthwhile in terms of significant revenue, was a Saab parts revenue share, and I discontinued it as soon as I got my first Saab parts advertiser because I didn't want to compete with my own advertisers. Even the Amazon affiliate program targeted for use with over 100,000 active monthly users generates peanuts compared to the direct CPM based advertising (that is, advertisers that I got by virtually hitting the bricks and presenting to...). So, promoting a Kiva credit card on Saabnet is going to get, I'm betting, exactly zero takers. I'm still trying to get over just the hurdle of getting anyone to make the jump from Saabnet user to Kiva user. Someone tell me why that has been so universally unsuccessful.

But, but... the Advanta affiliate program is most definitely a great fit for KivaFriends. While most users who are here currently have already decided to either get a card or not get a card, new future users who decide to get a card can do it through the KF Advanta affiliate program and, I think, the revenue would be significant to KF! I wish I'd known about the program before I got my card. I would've waited for KF to get on board.
