Don't know if this has been suggested already, but I just had the idea of linking Kiva with a quit-smoking scheme.

Instead of putting the money you don't spend on smokes in a piggy bank as a motivation, you lend it to some entrepreneurs and every week you add a new face of someone else who has benefited from your decision to your portfolio - you could look at them as your growing personal support crowd cheering you on to get through it.

While the indefinite challenge of never smoking again may appear too abstract and daunting, you could just set yourself the goal to stay clean until the first loan gets paid back in full. You get to watch its progress as the installments come in and by that time, you should be over the worst and can reassess.

Added benefits would be that looking through the entrepreneur pages gives you something else to think about while you are craving and you will be less likely to feel too sorry for yourself when things get a bit tough.

I'd love to try it, but I gave up smoking years ago.  Wink

I reckon there could be some merit in it, if it was presented properly - maybe in partnership with some health/self-help/anti-addiction entities. What do you guys think?

I think this is a fabulous idea. Isn't there a "Smokers Anonymous" or similar organization that we can pitch this idea to.

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

I have had a look at the Website of the American Lung Association, where they offer advice and help programs for smokers.

On their contact page there is also a form for "Web Sponsorships and Promotions - To form promotional partnerships, or undertake Internet-related affinity marketing ventures."

http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=23670

Maybe this would be one avenue worth exploring.

Question is, how do things work here? Should I try and get in contact with Kiva staff and tell them of the idea or will they find this post and follow it up, if they think it's worthwhile?

Hi DirkG,

Welcome to Kiva Friends! Once in a while the folks at kiva read the comments here, but for the most part they don't always respond. I would suggest you send something to them directly. Oh another suggestion for anyone trying to kick the habit, find a hobby!

Hi Everyone - I think "Kick the Habit with Kiva" is an awesome idea.  I also think it would work well for a Lending Team, either for one individual or for a group of friends trying to quit.

For example, Bob could set up a team: "Bob is Kicking the Habit with Kiva" and all of the money he does not spend on cigarettes, he could use for loans. In addition, his friends could make loans on his team to show support.  To make it fun, teams could compete to see how many loans they could make, which would show how much they have NOT been smoking.

Either way, it's a great idea and I'd love to get a team started to show how well this could work.  If any of you have friends who are trying to quit who would like to try this, let me know.  I'll be looking for other avenues to get this going.

Thanks for the awesome idea!!

Lyndsey
