20 year-old Silvia is one of the members of this group. Silvia has only an elementary school level of education and in a few months time she will become a single mother. For this reason, she decided to start working in her own business selling fast food, Mexican snacks (stuffed chilis, tamales, empanadas, stuffed corn cakes, tacos and sandwiches) and pizza. She makes her sales door to door to her friends and neighbors.

"Safae is a 28-year-old divorced mother who works hard to fulfill her two children’s needs. She struggles to keep them happy and satisfied with her hard work so that they won't need their dad's help. She lives to keep her children in her warm, loving home and within eyesight.

Safae has been selling cosmetics and perfumes for four years. She has been an Al Majmoua borrower for four cycles, and it has been a good experience for her, since the previous loans positively affected her social and financial needs.

Safae is requesting another loan from Al Majmoua in order to buy new perfume and cosmetic collections so she will have good and exciting offerings for the summer. She hopes to expand her business and open her own shop instead of going from one place to another to sell her goods."

Kribian del Rosario Salcedo Velazquez is a single mother and sells salchipollo (a local dish made with chicken, french fries and seasonings) and hamburgers. She chose this activity because she needed to support her little daughter, since she could not count on help from her ex husband. Her goal for the future is to have her own restaurant with every type of fast food appetizers. She has good personal references. She is very well known and appreciated by her neighbors. She will buy tables and chairs for her her business and thus be able to attend to her clients.

Aida is a single mother who lives in the Sonsonate Department [El Salvador]. She works selling clothing that she herself makes. She does her work in a busy area of Los Cobanos, and she has had very good sales recently. Her customers prefer her for her originality.  She is using her Kiva loan to buy fabric, thread, needles, etc, to use in sewing more clothing.

The Hanny microfinance group is comprised of Ms. Crispina, who will purchase a blender and sacks of oranges to make juice; Ms. Dolores, who will purchase stationery; Ms. Silvestra, who will purchase candy in bulk; Ms. Patricia, who will purchase soft drinks, vegetables, meats, and propane for her business; and Ms. Erika, who will purchase lingerie to restock her business.

Erika is a 19-year-old who studied up to the third year of middle school. She is single and has 2 children: Angel Adair, who is 6 months old, and Kevin Jesus, who is 4. She sells lingerie and fashion jewelry for a living. She has requested this loan in order to purchase bras, camisoles, panties, undergarments for boys and girls, twin bead ponytail holders, headbands, etc. She started this business a year ago with the money that she had from a tanda--a rotating savings and credit association, which is a popular form of saving money in Mexico. She started out selling gelatin, then decided to launch a lingerie business. This business is very important because she supports her family with it. She feels very proud of her work and of her good customer service. Furthermore, she is able to take care of her children with this business. She wants to expand her business by selling baby clothes, and she plans on doing so with the profits from the lingerie sales. She hopes that her children grow up without want, and dreams that she can give them either a plot of land or a property, as well as a good education. The members of this group would like to tell Kiva and Fundación Realidad that they are grateful for allowing them the opportunity to launch a business. Erika states, "For me, as a single mother, sometimes it is good receive help because at times, we cannot do it alone. Thank you."

Mr. Felix Avalos split up from his wife many years ago, and since then he has been responsible for taking care of his 3 young children, aged between 10 and 5 [...] He has been working as assistant welder in a "maquiladora" [a bonded assembly plant set up by a foreign firm near the US border] for 13 years, and sometimes he works overtime to earn more money to provide his children with their daily meals. This borrower’s house needs improvements such as plastering and painting it to give it a better look.

Hope it's ok to bring back an old thread...

http://www.kiva.org/lend/339719

"Our client, Jaime, has been living with his 13-year-old son for 7 years, since the boy's mother left them and ran off with another man. Over the years, Jaime has taken care of the boy and they have both enjoyed a good and happy life together. After seven years, the boy's mother returned and demanded custody of him. Their son, owing to the length of time that had passed, no longer remembered his mother, didn't want to see her and was more used to his father. They went to court to fight for custody of the child and, a few days ago, the Judge ruled in favor of the father. Our client is absolutely overjoyed with the result after having lived through times of pressure and uncertainty over what would happen, and, above all, having been in fear of losing his only son.

Jaime will use this loan to refurbish his home. Jaime has begun divorce proceedings and is presenting the relevant documentation. In the end, father and son have returned to living the happy life they led before. Our client has a clear goal for the future which is to see his son become a professional. Jaime lives in Pacata Alta district, on the '10 de Diciembre' estate."
