I'm rather new to Kiva Friends and I hadn't seen any mention of a terrific book. Though written primarily for children, it's a great book about microfinance. "One Hen" tells the story of a young boy in Ghana who, beginning with one hen he buys with a few coins left over from a micro-loan his mother had received, gradually builds a chicken empire. But the neat part is that the story of Kojo is based upon the true story of Kwabena Darko who is now on the board of Opporunity International and was the founder of Sinapi Aba Trust.

A librarian from my local library had moved from the adult to the children's section. She knew of my interests and one day she stopped me in the hall and said she hoped I didn't mind that she had put a book on hold for me. I recommend checking it out for yourselves. If you don't have kids, you'll enjoy it all the same. The back of the book is packed with MF info. But don't wait to find the book, the website "ONEHEN.ORG" is wonderful. I think it will make you smile.

This was a really great heads-up - thank you! I just placed an order and look forward to reading the book. I was also glad to see there was a link to KIVA on the site.
I wonder if you'd like to also post your message in the Teacher's Clearinghouse thread here -

I'm thinking that if we can collect more book/website or other ideas in that thread, we could eventually post a bibliography at KIVAPEDIA in the EDUCATION CONNECTIONS page. This would be super-helpful for teachers.
In case you haven't seen that page yet, here's the link:

Great site.
I'm going to order a couple of books for our school library. I like that the site is interactive.
Hey has anyone tried the maze yet?

Hi Susan
My 7 year old grandson managed the first level of the maze and then got frustrated with the next.  He loves mazes but it was the coordination thing with the mouse turning corners and running into the walls that made it difficult.
He is 8 now - I should try it again - thanks for the reminder Mike - One Hen got pushed to the back of the shelf - it's out again now Smiley

Hi Mike....and yes there was mention of this book a while ago but I cannot find the original posting....no matter...you have brought it to our attention once again and yes, it is a great book.

For those of you who need teacher gifts, a copy of this book along with a Kiva Piggy Bank would be a great idea for any classroom....no?  I have give just such a gift to a good friend of mine who teaches 3rd Grade for her birthday along with a GC to get them started...she is already a Kiva Lender.

OneHen.org really is amazing.  My 8-year-old nephew is infinitely more informed about Kiva - alongside Microfinance - than any teacher he's ever had.  It started with a goal to stay on the website for 10 minutes, and it shortly turned into a lot longer.  He really enjoyed it, almost much as I did...  Undecided

I'm incorporating this into local awareness efforts.  It'd be fantastic to get teachers on board with this, and providing it to children as a fun summer activity may turn out to be my best argument to the school administration.  Providing ways for children to get into this is, of course, fantastic in itself.
