Angela, one of the members of the Santa María Group, is said to use a wheelchair, although I don't see one in the group photo.  I'm a little confused about whether she's a crochet artisan or a comedian on a radio show, but just for that latter possibility, I thought I'd highlight the loan.

--Diane.

When I read this loan request it seemed very familiar and the confusion about whether the borrower was a radio star or not definitely rang a bell (as did the 'where is the wheelchair?' question).  I did a bit of Googling and found the group's previous loan from December last year:
http://www.kiva.org/lend/258370

The following bit of sentence:
"actualmente poseen además del ingreso de su trabajo, un ingreso como humorista en la radio"
says
"currently [her family] have in addition to the income from her work, an income as a radio comedian".

So, it really isn't 100% clear who the radio star is, I'm afraid Sad

Kiva: Providing Loans to People with Disabilities  Link

The KivaFriends - Disabled Persons lending team was highlighted in a Kiva blog post yesterday.  I'd like to thank my co-captains Mona and Betty for the hard work that they put in preparing for the blog post.  While only a short portion of the interview materials we provided were used in the end, we are grateful for the recognition from Kiva of our successes!  A special thanks to Neda at Kiva for approaching us with the idea!

And of course  Thank You again to all who participate in the team!

"Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity - men and women - to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice. That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009

Khawla is a 54-year-old divorced woman who is also a handicapped person who has struggled with life’s difficulties. Three years ago, she started up a small business in tailoring and sewing.

She has prepared everything in her workshop to suit her situation so she can work freely and easily, and through these three years, Khawla has gained a very good reputation in her area. Now she has applied for this loan to buy more fabric and materials that can help her make more profit in order to expand the workshop and open a shop to sell her dresses and the clothes she makes.

Julio Olmedo Perdomo Añapa

Santo Domingo, Ecuador
Food | Grocery Store

Julio has a humble life, but he tells us that he enjoys his peace and quiet. His store stays open for night hours. His daily work day is at least 15 hours. Some years ago he suffered and accident while working as a field worker on a plantation. A stick hit his right eye causing an irreversible lesion and total loss of vision.

This has not been an obstacle because Juio continues his passion for sports. He currently plays volleyball with a group of friends. Also, he is the goalkeeper for a neighborhood soccer team.

Julio dreams of having his own house with a commercial space. Maybe he will have his own family in the future.

Juan Leonidas

Location Undisclosed, El Salvador
Arts | Weaving

Juan lives with his wife and two children. He manufactures hammocks; he makes about three of them per month at home that he sells to support his family.

At present, he’s asking for a loan to buy supplies for the business like silk cord in assorted colors. He also needs to buy sheeting for his house’s roof. With this purchase, the loan won’t only cover his business needs but also a family need so that they will be better protected.

This is an Al Majmoua client in her 50's, married & mother of three children. Thirty-nine years ago, she started working as a tailor.

She has been an Al Majmoua borrower for eight cycles, and almost all of her loans were used to pay for treatment for her child's illness. And still she would do anything in order to continue his treatment. She is a borrower in good standing.  She is applying for a loan this time in order to improve her business, through buying a new, updated tailoring machine necessary for her business.

The borrower is married and has two young children. She is living in northern Mexico, in the house of her injured mother, and she is caring for her.  She is requesting the loan to buy hospital furniture that her mother needs to move. These are a special bed, a wheelchair, and a hospital commode.

Her mother hurt her spine and is very delicate because of her age. The borrower wants her mother to improve from her illness, for this furniture to make it easier for her not to hurt herself, and for her mother's recuperation to be quick.

She plans to pay back the loan with the pension she receives from the government. Her husband will help her with the family expenses with the salary he receives from his job with a government institution.

Adelina is 56 years old and lives in Puntarenas, a city located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. She is a widow and the mother of two children, one of whom is a minor. Adelina established a recycling center in her home four years ago. She obtains raw materials from public institutions in the district and then sells them to two companies in Valle Central. Mostly she sells cardboard, glass, and paper.

Adelina is a disabled woman who suffered from polio when she was a young person. She was also in a traffic accident two years ago, which explains why she has a wheelchair that is not in good condition. Her recycling center provides jobs and is supported by local companies. Her greatest wish is to have a recycling center that is well-equipped and to be able to help other people with disabilities who are marginalized and lack jobs to support their families financially. Adelina is a leader in her community. With the help of a private company, she plans to open a photocopying center near the Monseñor Sanabria Hospital in Puntarenas.
