The World Challenge has the finalists posted for a $20k grant.  There are some amazing choices, and I hope you look at them all.  One of the options is linked to Kiva http://www.theworldchallenge.co.uk/html/project08_sufficient.html.

Fundación Paraguaya is in the running for a $20,000 grant from The World Challenge.  Fundación Paraguaya has an agricultural school called Escuela Agricola to teach poor students from the countryside how to grow food in environmentally friendly ways.  There is also a hotel, so people can visit the farm, either to learn farming or as a retreat.  Recently, Fundación Paraguaya held a Kiva Meeting for the Americas at their campus!  The farm grows enough food for most of the students' needs and generates some income as well.  The aim of the farm and hotel is to be self-supporting.  With this grant, the school would be able to get more modern equipment for their farm.  Students would be able to use this equipment, practicing and learning on more appropriate equipment.

If you go here, http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=58.  You can go to their website (there is an English option), then Projects and there will be one for the agriculture school.

"Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity - men and women - to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice. That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009

Thanks Collette for the tip, and Peter and Kerry for more links... and John and I have been counted.

This is quite an amazing challenge - have you watched all the other runnerup videos?  It is a good feeling to know that in the midst of hardship, there are groups like these all around the world trying to make a difference.

But how to choose?  Giving us the connection to Kiva certainly firmed up our decision, but as in every competition, all are worthy and I give thanks to the BBC, Newsweek and Shell for this kind of initiative to spread this kind of news around the world.

I go now to my blog - must pass this news on in my own way to my other friends with their heads in the sand...

p.s. we were hard pressed not to choose the flip-flop business in Kenya.  I wonder if people on cruise ships wonder where their flip-flops end up Smiley
