Hey Guys,

We have a new country coming on to Kiva in the next week to two weeks.  Just like last time (Haiti), it's time for some Trivia!

Clues:
1.  It has an official capital..and then it has a "de facto" capital
2.  It's part of a currency union so there is very little currency risk
3.  There's a little debate over what to call the country
4.  Former French colony
5.  "New Forces"

First person to guess it gets.....the undying admiration of Kiva staff and the KivaFriends community.  Post responses here and I'll flag it down when someone gets the right answer.

My other longshot would be...

Kwang-Chou-Wan off the coast of China and has a 'defacto/disputed capital situation AND a monetary connection to China'.

Can't wait to see this answer though!

Hi again - If you're not accepting Ivory Coast, how about Côte d'Ivoire?

I second/third/forth Côte-d'Ivoire...

  • Forces Nouvelles, the Ivorian rebel movement
  • de jure capital is Yamoussoukro, vs. de facto capital Abijan
  • FCA (Ivorian) Franc was pegged 1:1 to the French Franc, now part of the Euro
  • it's name is often translated in the local language (though I wouldn't call it a controversy on what to call it...)
  • ...and it's definitely a former French colony!

You guys are quick.

Cote d'Ivoire is correct!

And, on the name controversy, only inasmuch as different outfits (State Dept, news media, etc.) haven't coalesced behind Cote d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast.

Next time I guess we'll have to make it more difficult.  Good thing next time is coming really soon.....
