The massive 57-page
KIVA Quilt for "Raggle" thread contains everything anyone needs to know about this project, which started on December 20th 2007 with Henry asking "Let's see if we can come up with enough people (KIVA Friends) to pull this off" - to which the answer was a resounding "yes we can".
a very big thanks to everyone involved:
- the quilters: Henry, Rebecca, Margie, Jane, Queen, Margaret, and Laurie
- those who donated prizes: Henry, Eli, Diane, Steven, Ann, Jane, Margie, Rebecca, Scott (and Elle), Jane Sladen, and Susan
- the 34 people who entered the "raggle" - too many to mention individually, but you know who you are. The entry grid can be seen here, along with details of prize winners.
- the anonymous donor who with outstanding generosity matched the funds raised
- special thanks to Henry, for masterminding this great project, maintaining the raggle entry grid, devising the random draw, and receiving, accounting for and distributing the money raised
The quilt itself has retired to sunny Melbourne (congratulations Natasha) and is of course the star of the
Kiva Friends 2009 Calendar.

So, to business. As Henry mentioned back on October 19th:
. . . The quilters have unanimously elected Rebecca and Margie to manage the KF Quilt Fund when the wraggle is over. They will control the account and work with 2 or 3 additional KF members (quilters or not) to keep the account funding loans while having a small balance available to distribute to KF Projects. This committee of 4 or 5 people will decide the amount of $ to contribute to each project presented on KIVAFriends.org. . . .http://www.kivafriends.org/index.php/topic,1510.msg45333.html#msg45333Rebecca and Margie have invited Jan and Peter to join them.
The total fund available for donation to future Kiva Friends projects is...
$3,500$4,800 was raised in total. Deducting the big red number above leaves $1,300, of which $800 has gone to Kiva as a donation, $400 has been earmarked for Joe towards the running costs of kivafriends.org, and $100 covered the costs of shipping the raggle prizes.
The committee members have discussed what types of project the Quilt Fund will support. Our collective view is that they should be projects with a strong Kiva connection, whether that be borrowers or Field Partners. Examples from the past year of excellent fundraising projects the fund would have supported if it had been around at the time:
Florence's school,
Regina's wheelchair, and
computer equipment for GHAPE.
While the Quilt Fund is waiting patiently for exciting new KF projects to help fund, the plan is that any one time, roughly half of the remaining balance will be placed in short-term Kiva loans with 4 or 5-star MFIs. This process has begun, and you can see the loans here:
