Hi guys!

We really enjoyed last month's Community Conference Call and are scheduling our second call to take place on January 14th.

When: Wednesday, January 14th at 2pm Pacific time, 8pm Eastern time
Dial In (U.S.):  866-740-1260
Dial In (Outside U.S.): +1 303-248-0285
Access Code: 6415483

A few things:
1 - We really like having this be an open discussion, so there are no set topics for discussion, however there will be some major themes that will be touched on.  I think at the start of the call we'll bring up some topics that we want to cover and then move into taking questions from the community.
2 - We thought it worked really well last time receiving questions via the KivaFriends Chat Room or via PM to me, as it enabled us to move through topics quickly and create a really broad discussion.  It also allowed us to focus on questions which affected most users and channel questions which affected a small number of users to other sources.  However, I do know that the fun of a conference call is actually having that direct contact with the team and so we will encourage people to ask the questions themselves if they like.
So, on the day, if you have a question or issue you'd like to bring up, please either PM me, or I'll also be in the chat room so you can send it to me that way, and let me know if you'd like to phrase the question yourself.  Then I'll introduce you when we get to your question.  For those who are unable to actually be on the call or if you'd prefer me to read the question, we can do that too.
3 - We shifted the time to 5pm Pacific so that it's not during the workday for those on the Pacific time.  While we know that we'll probably never have a time that works for every community member, we think this might be better than the last call time of 2pm Pacific.
4 - Premal will definitely be on the call, and likely Matt will join.  We're expecting Gerard, Liz, Austin and Skylar also.
5 - I'm hoping that Dianne/Peter will be able to take notes again and post on KivaFriends for those who are unable to attend.

Look forward to speaking to you all again in a couple of weeks!

Fiona

3 - We shifted the time to 5pm Pacific so that it's not during the workday for those on the Pacific time.

Unfortunately 5pm Pacific is not during the waking hours of any Europeans, except the insomniacs...  (1am GMT, 2am Central European Time)

2pm Pacific as with the December conference call seems the least ungood compromise, as it allowed Europeans to participate without staying up into the wee small hours (10pm GMT, 11pm CET) and was at an achievable hour also for most Australians (7am Perth, 9am Sydney & Melbourne)

(and, won't many working people on Pacific time generally be commuting between 5pm and 6pm?)

So....   is there any chance at all of reconsidering the timing, Fiona?

I'm definitely open to sticking to 2pm, we were moving it as there seemed to be a number of complaints that people couldn't attend as they were at work on the west coast of the US.

Does anyone else have an opinion?

It might make sense to leave it at 2pm if there are a known number of non-USAians planning to call in.  If not (I think Peter was the only one last time? and Wolfgang was in chat?), perhaps moving it for greater overall participation would be reasonable.  How many here from outside North America would join the call if it were at the earlier time?

Fiona -- I've received 3 quick PMs from KivaFriends who wanted to post in this thread but cannot.  (The only reason both Peter and I were able to post is that we are both forum moderators and have privileges to post or edit in locked or restricted threads.)  I do not have a way to reach Joe to ask him to change the settings, so perhaps we can start a discussion thread in an open area for people to comment in.

(Once someone does so, I can post the pointer here.)

(PS: One of the PMs I got was from Natasha who said she would attempt to call in from Australia if the time were pushed back to 2pm PST.)

Thanks Richard!

BTW everyone - i'll need to pin down the time by end of day tomorrow as we're announcing the call in the newsletter, so pls speak up if you feel strongly.  it seems right now the question is are there more people who would miss out on the west coast of US if we have it at 2pm vs. the number of people in other countries would miss out because it's at an unreasonable time - and that's what I'm not sure of.

Maybe I'll just include the day Jan 14th in the newsletter and we can finalize the time as it gets closer.

Speaking from the US west coast (PST) I cannot make it at 2pm (at work)...but neither could I make the 5pm (commuting). For me personally the weekend would be better....6-8am. But I don't think this should revolve around my schedule. As long as I can get a transcript I'm fine. I assume if there was a burning question I needed answered I would PM someone who was attending and have them ask in my place.

Because Kiva has participants from around the world (and its timezones) it is important that this is equally inconvenient for all of us. Maybe open a poll with different times and let people vote?  This world meeting planner may be helpful in locating a time that would work for most people.

- Joan

PS: Fiona, are you taking requests for the agenda? (topics rather than any specific question)

Europe has given Kiva both regular lenders and power lenders and, in my humble opinion, they should be given the same opportunity to take part in this call/chat as we who live in the US.

I agree.

We're not going to take agenda topics, but we are taking specific questions.  If you can't make the call, you can PM your question to me in advance of the call, but please PM it on the same day if possible.  We won't have a very structured agenda other than 1 or 2 topics we'll kick off with before opening it up to questions.
