I don't know if this will make any sense. It occurs to me that in a very general sense, public education is nearly useless in most industrial nations, the US being number one on that list. Sure, a few highly motivated students move on to do great things, but the average level of reading, understanding, expression in the native language is dubious at best. It would be nice to fix that, but I have no idea, at least none that will ever be tried. So, should we close the schools, or be happy when someone from a horrible family background with no inspiration from parents and no financial help goes on to do great things?

I believe the microlending concept to be similar. I don't care whether it appeals to people on the right, on the left or on the moon. It is clear to me that some number of people have had their lives and their familie's lives redically changed for the better via Kiva.org. I rejoice in this and don't worry about the rest. I think kiva is more effective in its domain than most of the public school systems in the first world.

I'm a right-wing ultra-conservative, but you'd never know it as I DO have a heart and a passion for helping others (hint, I didn't vote for the winner of the 2004 election)! Grin

My wife is more of a 'moon' creature... Tongue
