Our friend Charmaine has found yesterday two new donorschoose projects of one of our favorite teachers, Mr. D.!  Thumbs Up
-------------
Smart Tablets for the Critically Ill
http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=271329&zone=0

My critically ill secondary students need 3 AirLiners to help them access the Smartboard. These students are in wheelchairs and stretchers and can not fully access the Smartboard due to the height. With the help of these devices the students can now interact with the material that is being taught. They can manipulate the information and make it their own individually or in groups. More importantly they can have the freedom and access to a real and meaningful education.

$1475 left to fund

Laptops for Critically Ill Elementary Students
http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=269536&zone=0

Currently the 6 elementary classes have no laptops for the students to use. I am hoping to give these students a chance at their education through the use of these low budget laptops. For many of our students it is much easier for one to type than to write, particularly when one is lying in a stretcher.

We desperately need these 2 Levano laptops so that these students will be able to write their assignments independently in school. Hopefully they will also be able to use the Internet research and communicate with friends and family from their home school districts. Please help these critically ill students become students of the 21st century. Even if they are sick they still have a right to the best education we can provide them.

$ 757 left to fund

Hat Wave One of my favorite charities is BeadforLife.  They're being featured on NBC's Today show tomorrow, May 6. In the words of the organization:
"The show will feature the extraordinary work of BeadforLife, our poverty eradication organization working in Uganda. Over five million viewers will see how BeadforLife has created a network of women in Uganda and throughout North America and beyond to work together to eradicate extreme poverty".
Check it out - it's an innovative organization that does a lot of good. Thumbs Up

I have found another very inspiring DonosChoose project. (Thanks, Charmaine, for joining me!  Kiss)

http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=273594&zone=0

"We teach students with moderate and severe disabilities 9th-12th and peer tutoring classes 11th-12th grades. Teaching in special education, we decided that our goal would be to improve disability awareness for individuals with disabilities in our schools.

Our plan is to gather children's storybooks that are about disabilities for peer tutors to read. They will be required to read 5-10 books: critique each book, pick their favorite book, decide the grade level, write a lesson plan, gather their materials, practice their presentations and go into an Elementary school in our county and teach the lesson. This is our way of increasing disability awareness in our school communities. Our other hope is that some Peer Tutors will decide they want to go into a field in education by having this opportunity to be creative and express themselves while increasing awareness.

We would appreciate your support by helping us to add to our book collection. We are hoping get the project up and running with about 250 11th and 12th graders beginning in August of 2009. In the past, I have had several students that went on to college to teach after being involved in such a heart warming activity. One is now a teacher of the deaf in our county.

Your support for the project will help my teenage students to see how important others feel the project. It will also let them see they too can make a difference in the lives of others.

I made a donation and received a screen that said...

An internal server error occurred. Please try again later.

So I went back to do it again...
and then ... my confirmation email arrived from Donors Choose.

So now my only problem is that I didn't get a chance to write my amazing comment
about our amazing Ramona
and how amazing she is to tempt me
in such amazing ways to spend all my available cash.   Cry

FYI,
You can post comments later on Donors Choose if you go back.  The message does not have to be at the time of the donation.  I know this because I have done follow up posting after receiving the thank you packages as I wanted the students to know how much I appreciated their cards and letters.  (There items being tears to your eyes and a lump in your throat!)

I'm really kicking myself for missing the posts about these earlier projects!  Mr. D. is[, I believe, a hero.  I've never seen these technologies, but I have seen how much students with disabilities struggle without appropriate assistive technologies...wow...

Anyhow, in the theme of the moment, some might be interested in the Let's Get Cooking!! project:

"I provide occupational therapy services at a Title One school (>65% poverty). One of my classes consists of 8 students with moderate mental disabilities and some of the children also have physical disabilities.

Our supply funds are very limited, so I'm asking for your help to provide these wonderful students with a few items that we need for the classroom. Part of the moderate mental disabilities curriculum is to learn functional daily living skills. Simple cooking activities would help these kids become more independent as well as work on other skills including fine motor, math, and reading. Something as simple as opening a can of soup, pouring it in a bowl, and putting it in the microwave is a challenge for these kids. Imagine the sense of accomplishment when they learn these basic living skills.

Because our funding is very limited, our supplies/equipment is very limited. The few items that we do have are quite old and not in good working order.

Having a new microwave, toaster oven, and pitcher will provide many opportunities for these kids to cook and become more independent in the process. By funding this proposal, you will undoubtedly provide many smiles to these special kids' faces!!

$144 to go.

The difference that learning independent living skills for these students will make in the paths in life that will be open to them, and how they feel about themselves....I can't tell you, but maybe you can imagine.

Anyhow, just thought some folk might be interested  Smiley
