Susan, I read somewhere (can't find the link just now, will return to post if I can) that this list-vote was hacked. I haven't read anything regarding how Time would be responding to that, in terms of selecting or ordering the list.

The list was voted on in such a way that the first letters of the names of the top 20-ish vote-getters spelled out a comment referring to the group that hacked the list-vote. (But since then the voting has progressed and the list is now in a different order which no longer spells something out.) I'm going to try to find that reference this morning and post it here....

Found it: http://musicmachinery.com/2009/04/15/inside-the-precision-hack/It is called a "precision hack" and was orchestrated by viewers of 4chan. "moot" is the founder of 4chan (darn him, he stole part of my ubiquitous Internet name, grumble grumble...) Looking at the first letters of each of the top 21 leading names in the poll we find the message “marblecake, also the game”. The poll announces (perhaps subtly) to the world, that the most influential are not the Obamas, Britneys or the Rick Warrens of the world, the most influential are an extremely advanced intelligence: the hackers.
At the core of the hack is the work of a dozen or so, backed by an army of a thousand who downloaded and ran the autovoters and also backed by an untold number of others that unwittingly fell prey to the spam url autovoters.  I have not seen any reference yet to whether Time will be jettisoning the results of this poll, but I think the current results are... moot. --Diane. |
