It just occurred to me this morning that at the beginning of this month it had been a full year since I made my first Kiva loan.  WOW!  It totally doesn't seem like I've been a part of it for that long.  My Kiva portfolio still has that "New Portfolio Smell" to me.   Laugh

And it stuns me how much of a difference you can make in a single year by being able to re-lend your money.    You can really see how well Kiva works when you take stock at a landmark point.   I've been able to do so much more so much faster than I'd ever expected.

Time flys and folks are so busy that sometimes it doesn't really sink in in real time how long you've been at it.  There should be some sort of email or message on your portfolio when you have an anniversary.  I bet there's a lot of folks like me that it would really be inspiring for to see how much of a difference they've made already at each year's milestone mark.

That's an excellent idea, I think, for Kiva to give their lenders the feeling that they matter to them and to the borrowers.

(1) Annual mails on anniversaries of signing up with a break down of how many entrepreneurs they helped during the last year etc. Also annual reminders about funds "left" in their accounts.
and possibly
(2) Congratulatory mails on reaching certain loan milestones (like: 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000...).

I know that lenders with just 1 or 2 loans in their portfolios also matter (and that relatively few Kiva ever lenders reach the 3-digits-count) and that many of the big lenders don't really care for this kind of attention, but I still think that some recognition for those lenders that keep coming back regularly and form a backbone of the lender community would not be inappropriate.

Best wishes,
Wolfgang.

I would agree that time sure goes by fast!  It seems like only a couple months ago that I was opening my account, and telling myself I would "try it out" with 4 loans  Laugh  I guess it went so well that I couldn't stop there!  Ever since my one year Kiva anniversary last Thanksgiving, I too have been shocked with how far this has gone, and how many loans I have made and people I have hopefully helped, the connection I have gained with people around the world, and friends I have made here on Kivafriends.    It is pretty amazing how wonderful it had been.   Grin

Yes, I passed my 2 year anniversary last November, I think, and my portfolio, while tiny compared to that of many people around here, is far greater than I had pictured it being at this point.  That's the power of arithmetic progression, I guess (plus the persuasive power of all the kiva friends' initiatives).
