Last January there was a thread posted on KF about Play Pumps. Here is the link for those who would like to read more about what kiva friends had to say
http://www.kivafriends.org/index.php/topic,1647.0.html Fast forward until today. Hugh Jackman donated part of his $100k to a charity that drills wells because 1 in 6 people in the world do not have access to clean water. While in KF Chat a bit a go, Eli mentioned Play Pumps International and how KF had helped this charity last year. While reading GlobalGiving.com/green I ran across the Play pumps. The green challenge that Global Giving is sponsoring will give the top 3 Green Donation Getters a reward of $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000 respectively. Right now the Play Pump project is
5 donations 3 donations out of 3rd place. This challenge ends on the 28th of April. (I think the extra reward would be a great bonus)
Check out the globalgiving website, and remember $5 can make a difference.

And while you are at it, go to
http://www.PlayPumps.org and sign up for a monthly donation...the minimum is $6!
I mean, how cool is it that while the kids play, clean water gets pumped...if you've watched the video, you can see how happy the children are. It gives the mothers time to work in a vegetable garden as well as giving the kids time to go to school.
In case you can't tell, I love PlayPumps!

On World Water Day (March 22) we started giving a donation in honor of the day to
www.PlayPumps.org . We couldn't think of a better way to honor the day, getting clean water to villages delivered by smiling, playful kids! This year they have Campaign Malawi (a landlocked African nation), where their goal is to deliver PlayPumps to 100 different schools/villages.

Play Pumps is only 1 donation away from being tied for 3rd place and the $1000 bonus reward in the Global Giving Challenge!
http://www.globalgiving.com/pr/1600/proj1556a.html PS Challenge goes until the 28th of this month.

As of this moment, PlayPumps is
tied for third place , but the other organization has a larger dollar amount which, if I read the rules accurately, may put it in a position to trump PlayPumps if they end up tied . The bonus contributions are awarded based solely on
number of contributors and NOT amount donated , so several $5 donations would put PlayPumps squarely in line for third and a $1000 bonus.

Also, this is an excellent example of where competition brings about good. Keep your thinking-caps on as to how something like this could work at Kiva. The rules of the challenge are:
All donations up to $5,000 per individual made to eligible GlobalGiving Green projects on
www.globalgiving.com are eligible for a 50% match. Donations may be made online or via check will be matched, but redemption of gift certificates are not included in the match. Purchase of Gift Cards on GlobalGiving are not eligible for match. Match will be available from April 4 - April 28 or until $25,000 in matching funds have been depleted.
In addition to matching funds, projects are eligible to compete for additional funding. The three projects receiving the greatest number of donations will receive bounty prizes of $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000, respectively. Even if matching funds are depleted, the challenge portion of the campaign will continue until April 28th
Here is another similar competition at GlobalGiving:
Global Engagement Summit Project Challenge 2009
The Challenge will begin at 12:01 am on April 17, 2009 and will close at 3:00pm EDT on May 8 2009. While the competition is open, participants will compete to generate donations for their projects. At the close of the competition, ANY Project that is able to raise a minimum of $4,000 and at least 50 separate donors will be invited to stay on at GlobalGiving. These projects will be eligible to continue receiving donations from the general public, private and corporate foundations through
www.globalgiving.com .
The top three fundraising projects (most dollars raised) that meet the minimum threshold ($4000 raised from 50 separate donors) will also receive supplementary cash bonuses from the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) and GlobalGiving of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The project with the greatest number of unique donors (and meeting the minimum threshold of $4000 and 50 separate donors) will be awarded a bonus of $1,000.
Online donations will be accepted through May 8th, 2009. Checks received by May 7th , 2 PM will be included in the Challenge and will count towards the number of unique donors for each project. Checks received after May 7th will be applied to the indicated project, but will not count towards the Challenge. Checks should be made payable to the GlobalGiving Foundation and should clearly indicate the project to which the funds should be applied.
If a project chooses not to move forward with implementation within 180 days from the date of listing the project on GlobalGiving, the funds raised during the competition will be re-allocated to another winning project in the GES Project Challenge. The student responsible for the re-allocated project will have the choice to recommend which winning project from the GES Challenge will receive the re-allocated funds.

Through April 28th (Tuesday). I was wrong earlier, $10 is the minimum contribution, but lots of $10 contributions from different people will make a big difference! I've posted it on my Facebook page and I hope my friends there will notice. --Diane.

As of this morning 4/27 Play Pumps was in 3rd place with a 2 donor advantage. I was mistaken when I said multiple contributions could be made by one person. It updated just as I did a second contribution and thought it was mine, it turned out not to be. So each donor is only counted once, whatever the contribution. So like Diane said, $10 (which is the minimum) from many people can make a difference. Yeah for play pumps!

I think there is a possibility that it may check your IP address and use that to tell whether you have donated before or now; I intend to make another small donation tomorrow morning from my office, so I will see at that time whether it recognizes me as a new donor in the count. --Diane.

Will you let me know if it works for you from your office. Then I can use another computer if the count is still close.

I am also donating $10 to PlayPumps. Wow I love GlobalGiving! I am making a gift registry there for my birthday.

To me the BBB is more for oversight of businesses in the marketplace that offer a product to consumers in the United States and Canada.
What I feel is most important for a nonprofit organization is to be registered and reporting to
www.Guidestar.org , an organization that oversees non-profits. Both PlayPumps International and Global Giving are registered with Guidestar and have their tax form 990's reported for multiple years with Guidestar for anyone to view. I'd post a link to their forms, but you have to register to view them. Registration is free.

Another headcount for PlayPumps! I just clicked. Great site, I hadn't seen GlobalGiving before. I'll definitely be going back.
If you're interested in water delivery issues, for places that don't have suitable boreholes, you might also look at the Hippo Water Roller:
http://www.hipporoller.org/ And here's a detailed set of responses on the benefits and challenges of the Hippo project:
http://www.changemakers.net/node/6924 One of the things they didn't mention in the Changemakers review is that people in militarized areas have found a great positive side effect: if you have to walk through a minefield to get your water, rolling across it with 90 liters of water instead of your foot makes a big difference. In addition to saving lives, it's letting the people walk faster through dangerous areas, reducing water-fetching time even further.

Clearing my cookies and using a new email and credit card from my office (new IP) made my new donation in honor of my parents count from the office towards the total number of donors, in addition to my personal donation from home this weekend. --Diane.
