Break the Chain of Dependence

Hello all,  We have designed a way for people to make mosquito nets in their home for pennies.  The technology can be used to make window and door screens as well as many other products.  Our overarching goal is to "break the cycle of dependence."  We are teaching people how to take waste plastic and easily turn it into mosquito nets.  People who make the nets can help prevent malaria in their families and sell additional nets for income.  Traditional malaria nets wear out in 5 years and thus require a donor again.  The people who learn this system will have nets for a lifetime.

What I am trying to do at the moment is list people in need of a loan.  For less than $200.00 I can set up a family with all new equipment.  Significantly less if they can get used equipment.  I think this project will be much more robust and have a higher success rate if we go the micro loan route compared to just handing out money.   I am trying to set my teachers up with direct donations, but They can help put people on the ground in contact with donors I think.  How do I go about doing that?

A clarification.  What I wanted to know is this:  If I run across someone who wants to apply for a loan "how would I get them in touch with Kiva?"  (I do not want a loan I have a job.) But my work brings me in contact with people who could start a business if they had the start up funds.  I would much rather it be a loan instead of a donation.  (I am taking care of the teachers)

I apologize if this was not the place to ask questions or if my questions were not clear.  I was told to go to the lounge, introduce myself and get answers.  Introducing myself seemed to me to include telling you what I was doing.  I know the e-mails I have received do not represent Kiva or its spirit, but how many people have you driven away who wanted to help?
All my best to the spirit of Kiva and the people who make it happen.  I am sure it is not easy.

Brad, welcome to KivaFriends.  Your project looks and sounds fascinating, and I hope you'll tell us more about it, and about other work you're doing that might be along the same lines.

Any confusion or concern here on the part of KivaFriends is probably because in the past, people have joined and asked for money from the members, which is not part of what KivaFriends is for (per the Terms of Use).  Your first post wasn't clear as to what would be helpful, so members may have assumed you'd joined looking for money.  I see that is not the case, and thanks for the clarification.

The best way for individuals to obtain loans to help them start their business would be to contact the local Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) with which Kiva.org partners.  They do not exist in all countries (yet Smiley ) but you can find a list of Kiva's current partners here:
http://www.kiva.org/about/partners/

KivaFriends is a community of lenders who support Kiva.org, and many folks here have creative ideas for publicizing good causes, or contacts in other parts of the world that may be helpful.  Perhaps some folks will chime in here with helpful ideas!  We welcome your participation in our other discussions also.

Hello Brad and  Welcome

I do apologize if Kiva Friends has been less than completely welcoming to you.  We are a community and as such, there is an etiquette that we try to follow.  For myself I have to say that I thought your first post was well-intentioned but a little vague on the details of what you were looking to get from Kiva Friends.  We tend to be very sensitive about requests for donations because as a community built largely around giving, we have gotten a number of requests in the past.

In any case, your project does sound like a worthwhile one, and I do wish you all the luck in the world with it.  To answer the question I do think you are asking, Kiva loans are "filtered" through on the ground Microfinance institutions (MFIs).  The best thing you can do is keep a list of these with your teachers to refer potentials clients.  Kiva works with some specific MFIs which you can find listed here.  There are other MFIs also, and you can find those through the MIX market website.

If that does not answer your question, I do hope you will let us know!  Again welcome to Kiva Friends,

Welcome!

And a your project sounds really awesome.  I think you're right about using micro-finance instead of straight give-away charity.  The MFI's (the lending institutions that actually make the loan and handle the collection of the payments) are the one's you're going to want to put the potential borrowers in contact with.  What countries are you looking to be involved with?  I bet us kiva friends can REALLY quickly fetch you the contact info for the MFIs that work with Kiva in the specific countries you're interested in being involved in.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the help and information!  I apologize for the crazy start.  I will look into your suggestions tonight.  There is a lot of logistics and problems I see but have not figured out.  So I am sure I will be back with more questions.  And I will try to do a better job asking them  :)
Thanks again!

Brad,

I hope you're still monitoring this thread.  I'd be very interested to hear how your bednet project is going, so if you have time, I'd love to get an update.
