In the interests of transparency, I am being transparent.

Recently, there has been a request for better categorization of loans. For instance, “Poultry” is too broad to include roosters, and does not “telegraph” to the loaner what possible uses the “poultry” might have.

So, an unfunded mandate was suggested, having the MFI’s spend extra time and money categorizing their loans to better suit the needs of the few.

To alleviate this burden, I suggest that those in favor of the new category and the additional burden on the MFI’s to meet their needs, put forward a small stipend, let’s say $10, for the extra work to review each loan. Since obviously, the results of the extra work cannot be seen until the work is completed, this would be for each loan that is offered. One cannot say “Oh, after reviewing all the loans, you did not find any that meet our criteria for re-categorization, therefore we owe nothing”. Each loan was looked at, each loan receives the stipend from the group requesting this extra work.  And, of course, since there are over 100 MFI’s, we cannot single out, PROFILE, any one group, but rather treat the entire loan pool the same, which means each loan posted should be reviewed by the MFI with the $10.00 fee paid by the group requesting these global changes.

Surely, such a simple solution to meet the needs of transparency is not beyond the means of those so passionate about this topic ?

I am certain anyone so committed to this issue would obviously jump at the chance to see this implemented at their expense.  For if you do not take on the burden for which you so willingly thrust on others, what kind of world are we living in ?

After all, there are some MFIs who cannot afford even the people and time needed to do the basics now required. To bankrupt them in order to do more paperwork is unconscionable

Uh, yeah.  There's no extra work involved.  Kiva just needs to add one item to its list of loan types that it already doesn't list.  Where is the money coming from now to search out and eliminate the loans for prostitution, drug dealers, arms dealers, etc?  Nowhere.  Kiva makes a rule and the MFIs know to abide by it.  It's not difficult or costly in the least.
