This suggestion popped in my head after reading Julia's post about how she misses a lot of the Honduras loans.

So how about adding a function to the Kiva site where people can select their favorite MFIs and get a e-mail alerts when they add a new business in need to the site? That could be interesting.

This could kind of already be done with the general RSS feed, but those will alert you to all new loans added to the site from all partners. Unless you have a good RSS reader that can filter messages to only keep ones with the countries you want and discard the rest (the general feed does publish the country in the subject titles), I can see where getting hit with alerts about everything when you prefer specific countries or MFIs can be considered counter productive.

I have to agree. The more options one can have to tailor the service to their personal preferences, in effect the more user friendly the service becomes (in general) and hopefully the more inclined that person is to use the system.

Joe,

Have you gotten any feedback from KIVA on this yet? Who did you email or contact, I would like to echo the suggestion?

I would love to get alerts for specific MFI's or countries/regions. The prospect of having to regularly check KIVA will not always fit well with my schedule.

Best wishes,
Paul

Great idea! Especially for Kiva accounts with funding just waiting for an entrepreneur from a specific industry or country, too. Any Search criteria could readily be made an Alerts option.

I actually asked for this, and one of the Kiva developers told me how to do it with their RSS structure and feedrinse.com. It works...

Yes, yes, yes!!!  I'd love this feature.  I'm not super computer savvy, so the idea of learning how to use RSS is just too much like hard work for me.  I'd love to get an email alert each time a business is added from my favorite Field Partners (or favorite countries, favorite business types etc).  This would help me feel more excited about donating, if it was right there in my inbox!

I often visit the site, troll through all the businesses, and don't find anything I'm interested in lending to.  After a few times of doing that, it just makes me lack enthusiasm for returning to the site.  I am thrilled with the businesses I have lent to so far, and would love to lend to other similar ones, but I find them hard to find.  Maybe that's because others are looking for the same features, and those loans get 'snapped up' more quickly?  An email alert would be a great way to tackle that issue for me.

Okay, this feature has been created now, but not by Kiva.  Thank our friends at betterlabs.net for building Kiva Alerts on top of the new Kiva API:

So I hopped on this new feature right away thinking awesome.  This morning I received an email from them listing loans to those countires for the past 10 days or so.  But when one of the countries came up this morning I did not get an email regarding that posting.  Sooooo, I suppose it will be helpful when there are 1000 loans and they are up for several days but it isn't going to be an instant notification system.   Karen
