This suggestion popped in my head after reading Julia's post about how she misses a lot of the Honduras loans.
So how about adding a function to the Kiva site where people can select their favorite MFIs and get a e-mail alerts when they add a new business in need to the site? That could be interesting.
This could kind of already be done with the general RSS feed, but those will alert you to all new loans added to the site from all partners. Unless you have a good RSS reader that can filter messages to only keep ones with the countries you want and discard the rest (the general feed does publish the country in the subject titles), I can see where getting hit with alerts about everything when you prefer specific countries or MFIs can be considered counter productive.

I have to agree. The more options one can have to tailor the service to their personal preferences, in effect the more user friendly the service becomes (in general) and hopefully the more inclined that person is to use the system.

Joe, Have you gotten any feedback from KIVA on this yet? Who did you email or contact, I would like to echo the suggestion? I would love to get alerts for specific MFI's or countries/regions. The prospect of having to regularly check KIVA will not always fit well with my schedule. Best wishes, Paul

Great idea! Especially for Kiva accounts with funding just waiting for an entrepreneur from a specific industry or country, too. Any Search criteria could readily be made an Alerts option.

I actually asked for this, and one of the Kiva developers told me how to do it with their RSS structure and feedrinse.com. It works...

Yes, yes, yes!!! I'd love this feature. I'm not super computer savvy, so the idea of learning how to use RSS is just too much like hard work for me. I'd love to get an email alert each time a business is added from my favorite Field Partners (or favorite countries, favorite business types etc). This would help me feel more excited about donating, if it was right there in my inbox!
I often visit the site, troll through all the businesses, and don't find anything I'm interested in lending to. After a few times of doing that, it just makes me lack enthusiasm for returning to the site. I am thrilled with the businesses I have lent to so far, and would love to lend to other similar ones, but I find them hard to find. Maybe that's because others are looking for the same features, and those loans get 'snapped up' more quickly? An email alert would be a great way to tackle that issue for me.

Okay, this feature has been created now, but not by Kiva. Thank our friends at betterlabs.net for building Kiva Alerts on top of the new Kiva API: http://kivaalerts.com/

So I hopped on this new feature right away thinking awesome. This morning I received an email from them listing loans to those countires for the past 10 days or so. But when one of the countries came up this morning I did not get an email regarding that posting. Sooooo, I suppose it will be helpful when there are 1000 loans and they are up for several days but it isn't going to be an instant notification system. Karen

Exactly my experience Karen. I guess it is nice to see that loans I was interested in have already been posted & funded in the last week or so. But I did not receive an alert for the Mongolian loan posted this morning that you were able to get on. Nor did I receive any alerts by Country: Moldova or by Primary Activity: Agriculture and/or Farming, all of which posted today. So far it is a wonderful tool to peruse the loans I wished I had been able to be a part of

Yes, Palestine isn't on the list. And I agree that this tool just lets me know the loans I missed. So I don't know if I will keep it connected. I logged on to Kiva. org this morning and first thing I saw was the Mongolia loan and clicked to loan. I almost fainted and fell of my chair when it loaned. I thought I was dreaming. Maybe I wasn't really awake at the computer. I think maybe the fact that the meat shop the lady was running sold horse meat might have been the reason that the loan was on for more than 15 seconds. I paid and went back to read it and it was gone. So it did not stay around but maybe 30 seconds. I just got lucky. I wonder how often the notification site will send notices out, daily, weekly or just how often. But it diffinitely isn't instant notification. Eager for the conference call this afternoon for more news and stuff. Karen

I also checked both Gaza & the West Bank without any luck. I did notice that Israel is listed as well as the Cayman Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Holy See (Vatican City ), Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Oman, Qatar, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom & the United States.

Hi Ronn,
County collecting on Kiva is really fun, but it may drive you crazy. I have 45 but I am missing Palestine, Bulgaria, Chad and Cote D'Ivoire. It is further confusing because there are countries like Chad for instance that I am not sure were really ever a real loan Country. By that I mean folks made loans but they were all refunded. I sure may be mistaken about this but someone will be sure to set me straight if I'm wrong. And, of course, Ecuador was a country many of us made loans to and the MFI became problematic and it is now permanently closed and currently there is no other MFI in that country that KIVA is working with. There are also countries that made just a handful of loans and circumstances closed their operations, like the first MFI in Gaza. So I think maybe 48 is the answer of possibilities if you include Chad. Someone who has been a member longer than I can add to or correct this entry but that is my take on this subject. WELCOME to the wonderful, crazy world of KIVA. We are glad that you have joined us. Karen

Karen, Perhaps I am misunderstanding and you are referring to another MFI, but so far as I am aware Ryada, a partner of CHF International in Gaza is still active. They experienced some difficulties in the recent military action, but they and their loans are still listed as active. -Kerry-

Thanks for clarifying Wolfgang, I could not find the reference. I thought there might have been a MFI previous to Ryada, but couldn't find it. -Kerry-

I set up several KivaAlerts and have yet you receive an email. I even added a country that I know has existing loans. Is it working for others of you?
Also, how do I change my alerts, once I get them to work that is?
