I just got a note from Mr. S and he is getting ready to use Kiva in his classroom.  I found this project on DC of his to get him started.  As many of you remember Mr. S was blown away by the kivafriend response to his Three Cups of Tea project and also blogged about kiva and kivafriends on his blog.   Here is the new project:  I can't think of a better project suited for kivafriends.

Laptops for Microfinancing Project
I am a high school Social Studies teacher in a high needs school district in upstate New York. I teach 10th grade Global Studies and 12th grade Government and Economics.
My school district lacks the resources to provide adequate technology in the classroom to help the students become competitive in today's world.
I would like to get two notebook computers for my classes so that my students may have continual access throughout the years and to make technology more integrated into my curriculum.  The students One of the projects I am hoping to do is have the 10th grade students research loan applicants on a global microfinance website like Kiva.org.  The students will thoroughly research the country of the applicant to help in determining who they would like to loan money to. They will present their recommendation to my 12th grade Economic classes who will weigh all the candidates and make the final decision on how the money will be allocated. The 10th graders will be able to see the results and progress made on the repayment of the loans and, when they are 12th graders, be the ones making the final decisions. This project would allow my students the opportunity to participate actively in shaping the world they live in. Many of my students come from disadvantaged homes and this would allow them to witness how a little effort can make a difference.
Your generosity will truly make a difference to my students in opening their eyes to the world around them and ensuring that my future students have a great chance at success as well. Your donation will allow my students to be able to actively participate in skills needed for the 21st century and take an active interest in their education which will propel them toward a college degree.

Hey just stopped by on the sound advice of my Kiva friend cjp1973 (not sure if they use their name)I was so happy to see this posted on here and thanks to all those who have donated so far it will help make a difference. Last year I proposed this project to my school administrators and they loved it. There was a few tricky areas about them giving my class the funds needed to loan, but they have been worked out and I am fine tuning the curriculum to get the most out of it. As some of you know I have been experimenting with blogging to eventually use in the class and I plan on having one for this project as well. I will keep you all informed. I am slowly making progress in my push for the students to be able to learn in the 21st century and like last years 3COT project (which we will do again and beat) and your donations to my microfinancing project you all are making a huge difference. Thank you.

Last week was my birthday. I was asked by someone about a giving page @ Donor's Choose. Due to some technical difficulties with the website, I was unable to create a birthday giving page. I have since received a reply from Donor's Choose... and there is now a "give-back birthday" page in place. I have chosen only ONE project. It funds books for a school in my home state of Wisconsin. Unfortunately it has only 5 more days to get funded. I purposely eliminated all the other projects due to the short time left in the hopes this project can be funded.

The link is here:

I am posting this in response to inquiries.  Please do not feel pressure to donate to this project.  This will be the only post on this topic.
Thank you.

Thanks for posting the link again Jane.  I think it's terrible when a teacher has to use their own money to buy books to help children learn the joy of reading.

I had been having trouble with Donors Choose and finally received a reply to my email.  Seems it didn't like my Canadian postal code.  Just stopped accepting me one day  Huh?  So they have given me a 00000 zip code and now it works fine.

I like to show the Kiva Friends after our name.  People who donate on Donors Choose can see that and it's a good way to spread the Kiva word around while helping someone else.

I hesitate to donate too much however, because we cannot get my 29% Canadian tax refund, but for a KF birthday, well...

Well....................I knew Kiva Friends were generous but I did not think the project I chose would get funded by the time I had finished typing............but it seems it was funded in a matter of a couple of hours...

Somehow, (I have to follow up on this) additional projects that I did not choose were put on my page.....

OK, I am now going in and picking a couple of other projects to add.................. I will see if I can fix my page........

Be back in a few minutes.

I see that we had a little help from some others to finish out the only project I had on my giving page.  How wonderful!!

I have added 2 other projects to my giving page.  Both are projects that expire in 5 days.  All the projects picked are for books which I consider an essential resource for any classroom.  Children cannot succeed if they cannot read.  It is the foundation for their future.

Thank you everyone who donated!!  You are all so generous!! If these 2 other projects get funded, I will not be adding any more.  The next best thing would be to donate to one of the projects on the Kiva Friends giving page found here:
http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/viewChallenge.html?page=1&id=20825&category=78&max=10

Thank you again for your generosity!   Howdy

;DTo my friend Charmaine and everyone else who donated to my project I want to say, Thank you! I could not have done it without the support of Kivafriends. My project is moving on to the next step as soon as possible. I have really opened up my classroom to the 21st century and we are in the midst of multiple things already. One of my students is taking the lead to find out about Habitat for Humanity projects in our area so...I would not have expected it...especially from this student but giving is contagious...stay tuned...
