Kelli,

Thank you so much for joining and letting us know more about CJTF-HOA and their mission in Africa!  It looks like they are doing some wonderful projects, and I am sure your husband is learning a lot as well while he is there.

Welcome to Kiva Friends!  I hope you will stay around and let us know how your husband is doing, and more of the interesting tidbits you learn about life in Africa.

That is why the United States will partner with any Muslim-majority country to support expanded literacy for girls, and to help young women pursue employment through micro-financing that helps people live their dreams." - President Barack Obama, June 4, 2009

Okay, who's ready for the push?   Laugh   Ah, I wish I had that much to give to teachers.

How fun to be in third place.  I love the teamwork with my KF buddies.

There is something very satisfying about working together with friends.  Mona, yes, that was me who gave to Mahoney. I really hope that project comes to life.  I love teachers who are willing to take on giant projects.

I'm currently trying to get my local paper to do a story on DC.  Seriously, what would make a better back-to-school, community-centered, happy happy story? Grin

Our dear friend Cheryl has just let me know that a new teacher in her school has added a project to Donors Choose.  Below is what the teacher wrote for her proposal, here is what Cheryl had to tell me about it:
Quote
Kids will be producing local TV and podcast programming, using the books we're ordering as a starting point. So, for example, my students will read some of the student self-help books such as Who Moved My Cheese, Of Beetles and Angels, and The Code, then creating a TV teen advice show helping students develop coping strategies for school and life. Each humanities teacher will be developing different programming. Sophomores will be reading all those wonderful world cultures books such as Three Cups of Tea, My Forbidden Face, A Long Way Gone, etc. for their This is My Life project.  The teacher whose DC project I mentioned will be helping with these in her classroom, using any equipment we can get.

You Ought To Be In Pictures!

I am new to Projects-Based Learning and extremely excited to be working with a wonderfully amazing group of kids. I teach Digital Media I and II to 9th and 10th grade students. Our county has a very diverse group of students, most of whom are from low-income families and would not have any other means of experiencing digital media other than at school. These cameras would open up a world of possibilities for them.

My students are very eager to learn, have tons of ideas about what they can do and should do, but no supplies/resources to make these big dreams and goals possible. I teach them to "Believe" in themselves, to be proud of their community and these cameras would allow them to capture and showcase their community, their school and their experiences.

The flip digital video cameras are light-weight, extremely portable and most importantly "Digital". The digital attribute would deter any costs associated with purchasing tapes, pods, etc. The portability would allow the students the freedom to walk to and from on the campus and not be burdened down with heavy equipment. The cameras would also take only seconds to upload the students' videos which would in turn, increase the amount of time available for instruction, workshops, planning and group collaborations.

Your help will give my students the opportunity to see their landscape through new eyes. Their community will be on screen and new and fresh to them. Their lives will come alive!

In addition, there is another new Three Cups of Tea project, and an older Three Cups of Tea project that is down to $85 remaining.  You can find them here .

Charmaine was so kind to add some new projects to our Kivafriends giving list. Here are three examples:

Reaching from Classroom to Community
My school was developed 4 years ago to address the growing number of students that were being asked to leave the mainstream schools due to attendance or behavioral issues. My students are a diverse group living primarily in low income communities. The vision of our school, known by all students, is "Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of a true education" (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.). It is our goal to help students connect academics with the world around them. Service learning projects are projects developed by students that get them involved in the community around them.
Last year, a group of students came to me and wanted to work with homeless children. As a group, they contacted a homeless shelter in our area and proposed a project that connects reading and art. My students went after school and read a storybook to kids, ages 4-6, who live with their families in the shelter. After story-time, the kids did an arts and craft project that connected with the book. This project was met with such enthusiasm from my students that they want to continue their work there this school year. To do this, we will need art and crafts material to take to the homeless shelter. My students would love to continue this project and it would be a travesty if they couldn't. My students need art and craft materials to continue with their Arts For Kids project.
------------

A Tisket, A Tasket, A Reading Intervention Basket
I am the Response to Intervention Coordinator in our Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school. We attempt to identify and intensely intervene upon the students who are most at risk for difficulties in reading. Studies have shown that 88% of children who struggle at the end of 1st grade will also struggle at the end of 3rd grade. If left untreated, most of these children will continue to have difficulty reading for their entire lives.
Response to Intervention is a solution to reach every child. We strive to prevent disabilities before they happen. We will use the materials to implement reading interventions. Students will get to use these materials either in a group or individually. Specific skill activities or centers (i.e. phonemic awareness, phonies, etc.) will be targeted through these materials. Items requested include decoding, sight word and word family interventions. This will directly impact the student's ability to succeed academically.
-----------

Three Cups of Tea
As an avid reader, I constantly come upon material that I am inspired to teach. Often, however, the material is too difficult. I was delighted to discover recently that one of the most inspirational books, "Three Cups of Tea", an international best seller, has been rewritten for young adults into a "young reader's edition," which I have purchased and read.
I would like to acquire a class set of this new young reader's paperback. This is a incredible story of love, adventure, and determination, which can be readily utilized in my classes. I feel certain that this story will inspire and entertain my students while increasing their reading abilities and world interest, and lead them toward college and a better life.
-----------

There are more new projects like Got Knits? Crocheting for a Cause! (don't miss to take a look on the very nice thank you I got from the teacher for my donation!), A Reader's Journey to Persepolis!, Turning Dropouts into Successful College Freshmen and Netbook Computer for Special Needs Students and also some older projects that still need help like Special Needs Reading Centers and Mahoney Drinks Three Cups of Tea.

Check it out!  Smiley
