Knowing absolutely nothing about computers and how they work...
I don't expect an answer that I can understand to this question Smiley

but if this kivabank works so fast using Kiva's own data...
why, oh why, is the Kiva site so darn slow and 'unsearchable' Huh?

I mean, darn it all, I even have to remember to right click to open another tab when I'm on Kiva.
just grouchy...

-jan-

and why does the r and the n run together in darn so it looks like I'm swearing ? Smiley

The difference in speed comes from where the search is being performed. With kiva's site, you enter your criteria, your browser sends it to the kiva servers where it searches and then builds a page and sends that back and your browser displays it and all of those steps take time. Many times the same data gets retransmitted every time you alter your search. kivabank works differently, it pre-loads all the fundraising loans into your browser so that when you type keywords or change the other criteria, it is performing the search on the data already on your computer without having to go through the whole process of talking to a server every time you want to adjust the search. This not only removes the burden from the server of having to perform all the searches for everyone, but since it's all just done on your computer, the searches are much faster. I chose to write the application using Silverlight because of how easy it makes this method.

I'm glad you like it!

And thank you Laurie for your compliments as well! Cheesy

Paul, I love this application.  Is there any plan for the keyword search to include the loan description?  Example, widow, single mother, that would not be found other than in the full description...?

Thanks

Charmaine, I'm glad you love the app! As for searching the full descriptions... I do like the idea and have some solutions that would work. Currently, the app doesn't get the description until the user clicks on the loan so there's an issue of not having the data present to be able to search on it. I have some solutions and will look into this.

Hi Paul,

So, speaking of searches... Thinking

Can the search tool handle various forms of...2500 Words

Search for (Cats AND Dogs) OR (Fish AND Chips) BUTNOT (Burgers AND Fries) Tada Sarcastic

But seriously, the OR and NOT capabilities certainly would beef up the search function. Smiley

Richard,

I'm considering having an advanced keyword mode that would give more options where -- rather than having one keyword box that searches all fields (like now) -- it would have one for partner, country, activity, etc and 3 columns "Must contain all", "contain at least one of these" and "Does not contain".  It would be set up as a grid:

**Must Contain All (AND)**At least one (OR)**Does not contain (NOT)
Partner
CountryPeru Bolivia Ecuador
Activity
SectorRetail
Useclothing

This wouldn't happen until after I implement "saved filters" though. Then you could just flip between your saved filters without having to fill it out each time.

Cool, Paul, thanks!!!  Thumbs Up

by the way, Judy...

I assumed, "Search for (Cats AND Dogs) OR (Fish AND Chips) BUTNOT (Burgers AND Fries)"
would find at least two different types of business activities!!! Shocked Wink
